This wine I picked up this week thinking it was from Chile because it was in the Chile section of the store I frequent. I thought this tannat would be interesting to try. I was just going off knowing about tannat, so I picked it up. I did not read the label as closely I usually do. When I decided to open this 2016 Bodega Garzón Tannat Reserve I finally read the label closely and found that it is from Uruguay. What a pleasant surprise and I am happy I picked this up.
The nose was very pungent upon opening with a very heavy funk so I let it open up for an hour. After an hour the fruit started to show themselves. There is still the presence of funk but not as heavy as when first opened then the black fruits came out, black cherry, black raspberry, lack plum, baker's chocolate, vanilla and smoke.
On the palate the beautiful black fruit continues with black cherry, black plum, blackberry, dark spice, just a hint of well blended oak, smoke and rich soil.
This wine is full bodied with a well rounded mouth feel with medium + acidity and medium + leaning more to the plus side firm tannins that lead to a long dark fruit finish. A continued wonderful weekend to you all and please stay safe. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷 — 7 years ago
Good chardonnay with great flavour and body — 10 years ago
Deep black core, ruby mid section, starting to show some autumnal browning in the edges.
First sniff is a little murky, soupy. But this blows away after aeration and then a very quiet, sophisticated, graceful bouquet is revealed, hinting at cigars, black olive, sundried tomato, spicebox, fatty Ibericoham, black cherries and plumpudding. Terrific concentration on the palate! Silky soft and smooooth, cinnamon, milk chocolate, leather, discrete notes of oak and garden herbs all coalesce into the very long, echoing finish. Did I already mention this has sheer perfect acidity? An androgynous wine, masculine and feminine at the same time. A home run in this so-so vintage. — 10 years ago

Spicy Yarra Valley Syrah with a touch of pepper and cherry notes. Savoury style with supple tannins and medium body. From a good vintage in the Yarra. Easy to drink and good value. — 7 years ago
Pulling from the dusty, hodgepodge section of the cellar tonight. Tribouley’s 2007 l’Alba is comprised of 60% Carignan and equal parts Grenache and Syrah from 35 to 70 year old vines in Latour de France village of Roussillon. Brett-tinged, with cranberry and wild raspberry, licorice, truffle, lavender, and underbrush, with fresh cracked pepper. Secondary notes of earth, tobacco, and olive, make up the gamy nuance that pervades the background. Killer juice. — 8 years ago

Refreshing. Sweetly acidic. Has mineral depth the likes of an ouzel in a fast-flowing section of the Russian River planing for insects and nymphs — 9 years ago

Excellent rich Shiraz. Fruity nose, soft tannins. — 10 years ago
We had this with Oxtail dinner at Rattray’s in Mala Mala last night.
Not my usual detailed notes. This is ripe & lush like the Nederburg but with more complexity.
The palate showed ripe and slightly candied fruits of; dark currants, blackberries, black raspberries, dark cherries and a hint of blue fruits. Nice softly layered baking spices, dark chocolate, mocha, rich, dark soils, some dry top, well done granitic minerals and fresh red and dark florals. The acidity round & beautiful. The finish, ripe, lush, well balanced & polished. Good QPR here.
Photos of, today’s Mala Mala sunrise, baby calf elephant along with the nearly 40 in the herd and a total of over 100 Elephants seen today, playful male dominance of the Giraffe’s intertwining and smacking necks/mid section and the grand prize, male spotted Leopard. An amazing finish to our last day. — 7 years ago

I had the opportunity to visit this small boutique winery today and I have to say, I am looking forward to what the future holds for them! Andrew is in the process of getting his estate biodynamic certified and he throws his own amphora pots to ferment his wines as he ferments and ages more and more in this non-traditional yet traditional method. This sort of intentionality is reflected in this rosè, as he reserves a section of his vineyard specifically for this bottling. Traditional Pinot funk, fresh peppercorn, picked watermelon and June strawberries recall a Provence-style rosè. Bright yet generous upon the entry, with fresh strawberries and cut blood orange greeting the palate, unfolding to early-season mango and ripe, orange pith, and finishing with Bing cherries, dried river stones, and acid for days. Balanced and thoughtful - just a rosè, but speaks well for the future of this winemaker. I look forward to seeing more from him! — 9 years ago

A total wine pick-up, the nice bright label calling to me from a dusty bottom shelf in the "Other Reds" section. Was on the look out for some Petit Verdot ever since a friend of mine asked, "Why is it that I like Petit Verdot so much", and I had no good answer. Petit Verdot is a classic Bordeaux blending grape, typically added at 5-15% to a blend in order to improve tannic structure and boost the flavor profile. New world producers have been experimenting with this late ripening grape, especially in warmer climates, as a stand-alone counterpoint to strong Merlots and Malbecs. Hence Cellars is a smaller producer in the Walla Walla Valley at ~1500 cases a year, specializing mainly in Bordeaux grapes. Paired with a homemade shrimp red curry. Yum! ~$21 | #petitverdot #wallawalla #hencecellars
On the eyes: Concentrated, opaque, deep dark garnet, med+ stain, med tears, no gas/floc.
On the nose: A bit vinous with early hints of chocolate, spice, and violet yielding to leathery, jammy blackberry. Med+ alcohol.
On the tongue: Med+ acid, med alcohol, med+ tannin, med+ body, round on the palette. Dusty black fruit that is undercut by chocolate, spice, and cedar yielding to a wet leathery chewiness. Still a bit tannic - needs another year or so. — 10 years ago
Expressive and full of bright vibrant red fruits! Great alcohol content and very drinkable! Picked this up at Roths in the Oregon wine section after 5 minutes of trying to decide and I am definitely satisfied with my choice! An excellent Oregon Pinot Noir from the Eola-Amity AVA! Amazing! All the notes and characteristics of an Oregon Pinot Noir with hints of spice and dill. — 10 years ago
