Sanity Wine Cellars

Domaine Jean Michel Stéphan

Les Binardes Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2019

Well …. This is a complex rating. Drank at Red Hook Tavern (the academic philosophy 101 class definition of a platonically perfect restaurant-tavern) while eating the steak au poivre (which I have a particularly strong childhood game changing culinary memory attached to) and a couple at the table next to me was having an all out no holds barred take no prisoners heated couples fight (wtf?!) induced me to have (half way through this incredible bottle) a ptsd induced panic attack. Sadly had to walk around the block and couldn’t finish the au poivre 🥲 but the remaining half bottle of Côte-rôtie magic restored me to sanity (after the insane couple left.) Thanks to the Côte-Rôtie gods!

(Oh, this was remarkably good for such a young Côte-Rôtie, might not age crazy well, but a young prelude to what it can become…) 🔥🔥🔥

El Dorado Mourvedre 2015

Comes out swinging like a somewhat drier starburst candy—very intense concentration of red & black fruits, but w some air settles nicely into sanity. I had post meal but really begs for food-roasted sweet potatoes, perhaps — 6 years ago

Markham Vineyards

Napa Valley Merlot 2013

My Mid week sanity. This time it is in a form of a very enjoyable Napa Merlot.

Deep purple in color with a purple rim.

Nice fruity nose with blueberries, plums, black currants, sweet cherries, vanilla, oak, licorice, cola, light vegetables, peppercorn, earth, cloves, nutmeg, spices, chocolates, sage, eucalyptus, pencil lead and smoke.

Full-bodied and bold, with medium plus acidity and long long legs.

Dry on the palate with cherries, plums, blackberries, currants, earth, vanilla, licorice, pine, chocolates, dark coffee, spices and peppercorn.

Long finish with firm, green tannins and cherries.

A very nice Napa Merlot. Still young, but already enjoyable, and needs an hour to open up. A good sipping wine, once it is opens up, and also good with food. Paired very nicely with grilled meats on the barbecue.

Would be much better in 3 to 5 years, once more complexity comes in. Not fully balanced, but shows nice complexity potential.

I enjoyed it just by itself. A good sipping wine. The nose is not intense enough yet, but the palate is very rewarding. Alcohol is still noticeable at this point, but time will make it all better.

14.2% alcohol by volume.

The Eyrie Vineyards

Oregon Pinot Blanc

When cold, the mid palate seems lacking, great aromatics and very much variety specific. As it opens up, much more phenolic texture and sanity drive the finish. An interesting PB. — 4 years ago

Saint Fiacre Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine Sur Lie Melon de Bourgogne 2012

Dash of Atlantic sanity and wet stones white flowers. Lively acidic bracing texture carrying through to finish. Terrific match with the steamed Louisiana crabs with too much a dash of spice from Chesapeake co. Best Muscadet in recent memory. AA7! — 4 years ago

von der Fels Rheinhessen Riesling 2010

Call me crazy...Faint petrol, wet slate with smooshed cherry/strawberry! Whaaa where is that note coming from...on Riesling, Rhine!!!???

Update Day No. 8: Red fruits note was still going strong, and confirmed by three others, so my sanity is intact.

'Try to catch snowflakes on your tongue. It's fun. Mm. Needs sugar. It's too early. I never eat December snowflakes. I always wait until January. They sure look ripe to me. You think you're so smart with that blanket. What are you gonna do with it when you grow up? Maybe I'll make it into a sport coat.'

Artemis Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

The review mentioning movie theater buttered popcorn over a blackberry crumble had me questioning that person’s sanity, then I smelled it again and SHE’S RIGHT DAMMIT. Couldn’t believe it. Anyway this is a great wine. — 4 years ago

Domaine de la Terre Rouge

Tête-à-Tête Sierra Foothills Red Rhone Blend 2012

Boasting the kind of maturity you wouldn't get in a 6 year old human, that's for sure. That's why wines like this are great for your sanity. All put together well and approachable...it boasts alot of character, but knows how to use an inside voice. — 6 years ago

Sanity Alexander Valley Red Blend 2014

In the middle of a business trip, and a glass of Sanity is exactly what I needed. Nice fruit, good balance and not overpowering. Enjoying at Weft & Warp — 7 years ago

Thibault Liger-Belair

Les Saint Georges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2011

I have a decent supply of these, so I keep drinking them. Again an enjoyable bottle that has a lot of the components I want in a Burgundy nose, a light clean freshness, with earth and mineral notes. Feminine definitely. This doesn't have the barnyard and sous bois funk that sends me over the edge of sanity into fits of Burgundy induced delirium where I end up on street corners trying to score more '90 Vosne Romanee 1er to chug behind a dumpster, but it's enjoyable enough for a pleasant #burgundythursday — 8 years ago
