Rippon Vineyard

Lake Wanaka Central Otago Osteiner 2016

Somm David T
9.0

The Osteiner grape is a German grape variety created from crossing of Riesling and Silvaner. Despite its German roots, Rippon is perhaps the most notable producer of this variety. Nose of lemon, lime, ripe melon and white fresh florals. On the palate, fresh, clean, round and brilliant. Beautiful acidity, lemon, lime, melon, stone fruits, pear, fruit blossoms and citrus peel. Another photo of their amazing view and owner Jo Mills with my wife. Jo is such a great host with amazing passion and energy for making great wine. — 9 years ago

Mount Pleasant Wines

Maurice O'Shea Hunter Valley Shiraz 2006

Deep Crimson with purple rim. Has the colour of a less than 5 year old wine. Earthy tarry aromas. On the palate very savoury and enticing with meaty notes. Old School Hunter Valley Shiraz from Vineyards worked by the legendary Maurice O'Shea in the 1940s and 50s. Like the wines O'Shea made this will live for decades although this wine is more full bodied than these wines from that era. About 10 years ago I was lucky to buy a 1952 (my birth year) at Auction made by the legend. Still holding up at 50+ years of age and barely medium bodied. Had another bottle 457 weeks later on 22/4/26. This was the ripe rich South Australian model which thankfully they have left behind and returned to their medium bodied roots. This was dense Ruby and opaque. Ripe rich and tarry. A full bodied palate with great length and pronounced tannins. Already 20 years old and somewhat of a pup. Could cellar for at least another 10 years. Had another bottle on 23rd April 2026 with consistent notes. This is a huge wine and not true to the Hunter Valley style. Rich ripe and tannic. Will cellar for another 5 to 10 years plus. — 9 years ago

@David L There was a very good book written about Maurice O'Shea called "The Wine Hunter " written by Aussie Wine Journalist, Campbell Mattinson. The difficulties making wine with no power (no refrigeration) and the vagaries of vintage in the Hunter where it would often rain just prior to vintage - still often a problem for Hunter winemakers today. I remember it got so frustrating ( his obsession cost him his marriage) that he just sat down in the Vineyard and cried. Despite these huge obstacles OShea crafted some of the most remarkable wines ever made in Australia from the Old Paddock and Old Hill - still used today by current Mount Pleasant winemaker Jim Chatto. O'Shea along with Colin Preece (Seppelt) and Max Schubert (Penfolds Grange) are recognised as Australia's greatest winemakers in the formation of Australia's table wine industry. Mainly fortifieds before they came along.

Belle Glos

Las Alturas Vineyard Pinot Noir 2014

Winemaker Joseph J. Wagner is a 4th generation winemaker from a family with farming and winemaking roots in the Napa Valley since 1906. Deep Ruby (darkest Pinot almost looks like a Cab) with aromas of ripe berries and spice notes. The palate shows rich black fruits, blackberries, plums and black cherries, vanilla spice, cedar and cacao. Rich soft tannins, firm acidity on lingering finish ending with mineral tones. Nice! — 9 years ago

Had the various Belle Glos vineyards from Clark & Telephone to Dairyman. This offering is our wine clubs' pick. So different as a Pinot - great effort !

Naramata Malbec 2013

This is the Malbec I imagine our grandfather's drinking. Starting with a dark berry and progressing to a peppery, leathery finish. Deep Roots Malbec would be a great dinner wine, especially with a custom cut steak dinner. — 11 years ago

Really reminds me of burgundy. Neutral oak. Has a bit of that burgundy gym sock action going on. Lots of pretty, wild dandelion flowers. Great acid. — 12 years ago
