Naramata Vineyard Pinot Noir 2020

On the nose, a faint cherry... On the palate, firm Italian plum, firm red cherry... Very bright up front... Above medium acidity... The finish is again felt primarily up front... Overall, not overly complex, but quite an appealing style. — 3 years ago

A little bubbly for my birthday! Medium gold color with medium bubbles. Scents of lemon curd, oyster shells and brioche. Apricot, almond, and brioche flavors on the palate. Cheers to another year — 6 years ago

Champagne Rose Blend 1993

Lingonberry and pumpkin spice - complex. Bubbles from 93’ are still hanging on a bit! The palette is outstanding - gentle attack that builds in weight to a finish that lingers wonderfully. — 8 years ago

Yabby Lake Vineyard

Single Vineyard Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir 2015

Mid Ruby in colour. Red fruits of cherry and strawberry with a bit of whole bunch influence on the nose. The palate showing savoury red fruits but also a little sweetness. Certainly a good future in front of it - I should try the next one in 1 to 2 years time. Tom Carson has probably never made a bad wine in his life and he has a great terroir to work with when he is not in demand for judging at Royal Shows. Tasted another bottle 65 weeks later on 24th July 2022. Quite red cherry on the nose and palate. Sooty notes from whole bunch in the ferment. The perfect balance between sweet and savoury. — 5 years ago

Close Planted Yarra Valley Grenache 2017

Nose not giving much initially - just an earthy note - fairly contained. Probably opened a little young? The next night it showed red fruited aromatics of raspberry and strawberry. Very fine on the palate and quite delicious. The winemaker and owner Tom Carson with his French wife, Nadege, just won Viticulturalist of the year 2 days ago in the Halliday Wine Awards. They also import a range of Burgundies. In his “spare time “ Tom is also the winemaker at the highly regarded Yabby Lake. — 4 years ago

Brézé Saumur Chenin Blanc 2013

Bracing lip suckering bright acidity with a side of farmhouse funk, what’s not to love? With some spicy Korean style mackerel and some verse by Anne Carson on the side - it’s even better. — 5 years ago

Bérêche & Fils

Brut Réserve Champagne Blend

Watching football and drinking champs with KFC. Bereche is the bomb. I love opening it and waiting and hour or two to drink it, to let it balance out. I like to wait on all champagnes especially Bereche. After getting some air, you get such a nice mix of tart and sweet, like hard candy (Green apple jolly ranchers?), but you get the sophistication of a traditional 3 grape blend with a decent amount of reserve, plus some funkiness from all the naturalness of the process that they use to make it. It is a really smart wine that offers something for everyone without sacrificing anything or making compromises. I like this a lot more than a 9, but I have to save some digits for the Emidio Pepe '85s or the Pol Roger Winston Churchill '88s of the world. If you look at my scores, you see a lot of 9s but that's because I rarely write about wine I don't like. I don't want to be one of those yelpers who only bitch, especially when I know how much sacrifice goes into making great wine. I want to celebrate the Bereches of the world who go that extra mile to touch greatness, even though wine economics resist it. — 9 years ago
