Il Baffone Bianco Frizzante

Pale yellow with a bit of haze. Smells exactly like those Italian pear nectars you have as a kid. Bit of lemon and white flowers on the nose also. Ripe Bartlett pear is the most dominant flavour, with green mango, and finishing on the slick oiliness of fried sage. Medium minus acidity, medium finish. Don't know what to pair it with, buts it's highly drinkable — 5 years ago

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Sangiovese 2011

This wine disappeared rather quickly tonight. 93 without batting an eye, maybe 94. This wine pours a translucent red / violet. Nose of mint and herbal cherry. Entry is MUCH more rounded than expected. Sweet cherry cola and acidity building in the mid palate. Finishes with some bing cherry sweetness, some herb, hint of tart, hint of oak tannin but not much. Good weight without being overpowering, and went with rigatoni pasta quite well. I think this one has another 5 years before it starts to head down the hill. Nice bottle. — 8 years ago

Such a gorgeous perfumed beauty on pop. Violets leap from the glass. Just so sexy and inviting. I was truly bummed when I saw the decanter emptying for that last pour. Aldo Conterno is hands down the most dependably delicious Barolo producer for my tastes. Like Karl Malone it always delivers. Always! Old style purists may prefer Giacomo Conterno or Rinaldi (which are sensational) but Aldo Conterno is my desert island Barolo. I bet it even looks good in a bikini. — 9 years ago

Apologies for the soiled label. Pale Ruby with a tawny edge - almost transparent. Dusty earthy mushroom aromas. Oak is absorbed and so are the tannins. Barely medium weight, elegant in fact. Interesting for a Barolo / cherry notes on palate. Perfect to accompany food - in this case home made pizza. One of the lightest Barolos I’ve ever tried but very enjoyable. — a year ago

Incredibly complex. Wow… Where to even begin? Quite fragrant: waxed golden apple, green pear, pepper, and lots of lemon rind. The lemon and wax continue when drunk, but the apple turns to pear with intense acid, cream and vanilla and a touch of honey. This wine has no idea what it wants to be, and that makes it fun as hell. — 4 years ago

A nose of roses, tobacco leafs,star anise, liquorice, some red fruit too and we find these expressive aromas and flavors on the well balanced palate as well, the tannins have a nice texture, some grip but with some silk also, and a very “Nebbiolo like” finish with a slight touch of dryness. Not the most complex and a wine to enjoy with a meal. 91 pts

Nez de roses, tabac, réglisse noire, anis étoilée, du fruit rouge qui se retrouve en bouche aussi, belle acidité avec des tannins assez polis mais une finale très Nebbiolo avec une pointe d’assèchement un peu “noble”. Certes pas le plus complexe et définitivement meilleur à table. 91 pts.

The aromas are delightful with rose petal, tar, red cherry, pomegranate and Asian spices. The palate is not as interesting red fruit and spice with a hint of sous boos. This bottle lacks a touch of depth and complexity. Tannins are nicely resolved but just lacks real verve on the finish. — 8 years ago
