Pétrus

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 1970

Dusty floral nose, dried tea, Port. Amazing. Still clear and bright eyed, long finish with slightly dry tanins but wow. Still impressive 49 years later. — 7 years ago

Jerkface 9000

I am imagining my dear Mother's disapproval of the name as she was always a proper lady.

This is a very smooth, yet crisp citrus flavored beer.

10 in 19. Still wonderfully integrated. Restrained and elegant, was shocked that it was 14.9 abv. Tobacco. Red savory fruit. Medium-full. — 7 years ago

Okanagan Valley Gewürztraminer 2016

Not an Alsatian gewurz but really nice. Doesn't have the oily mouth feel or the long finish. It's a new world wine. Great flavour, peachy, fruity with lemon finish. — 7 years ago

Château Mouton Rothschild

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1945

Tasted blind. From a bottle that I’m told had a top shoulder fill. Reddish tawny color, translucent but with intensity. Port-like nose with notes of black cherries, plum, tan spices, molasses/brown sugar and some cranberry. Earthy and ethereal in the mouth. Intensively rich. Finish lasts forever. Guessed 47 Cheval Blanc. I’ve been fortunate to have this wine a few times now. It’s a freak of nature, which is very evident when sitting next to its 49 sibling. A top all time bottle for sure. — 8 years ago

Château Bellefont-Belcier

Grand Cru Classe St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2012

I’m in St Emilion and everything tastes good but this is pretty spectacular. Spicy and tight but not brutalizing my tongue. The nose is that perfect combo of leather with dried fruit. Could use a few years. Like another 4-5. Tastes like a 49 euro wine so if you can get the 14/15s for less that $40 I’d jump on it. Pre game for our dinner at the local hot spot down the street. — 9 years ago

Estate Red Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2017

Delectable Wine
9.0

The 2017 Estate Red is an unusual blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Malbec and 11% Petit Verdot. Racy and opulent to the core, the 2017 packs a serious punch. Jammy red fruit, chocolate, iron, smoke, tobacco and incense add layers of savory, earthy complexity. The 2017 is maybe just a bit rustic, but it has plenty of depth, too. Give it an hour or two in the decanter. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, July 2021)

Okanagan Valley Chardonnay 2014

This wine was made the year we got married. We bought it on our second wedding anniversary and opened it on our fifth. It aged very well. It has a beautiful balance of sweetness and acidity with a hint of toasted oak and a nice buttery mouth feel. — 7 years ago

Naggiar Vineyards

Root 49 Sierra Foothills Red Blend 2016

From Naggiar Vineyards in Grass Valley, California, a Sierra foothills town, comes this wonderful Cab.

Keeping in line with all of the terrific reds that are born of the vines from the Naggiar family, this Cab is full-bodied, very smooth finishing and pairs well with probably everything you've got to throw at it.

My new favorite "local" winery, try the Barbera, the 2016 Private Reserve La Bohéme and, especially, find the Black Beast, or, if lucky enough, the 2015 La Bête Noire Private Reserve.

Tablas Creek Vineyard

Dianthus Paso Robles Mourvedre Blend Rosé 2017

Deep, opulent pink reminiscent of a Tafel rosé. At 14.1%abv it's assertive and wonderfully balanced. Citrus peel, watermelon, red berry and meaty aromas and flavors, this is on the upper side of medium bodied. It's a serious wine that would be as welcome with a steak as with grilled shrimp or later. In 2017 the wine is 49% mourvedre, 39% grenache and 12% counoise. Delicious — 8 years ago
