Unfiltered Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel 2012

Popped and poured. This was opened on a night where there was stiff competition from the Old World (Ferrando Carema and Cascina Roccalini Barbaresco). While it was an obvious outlier, it held its own just fine. Abundant Zinfandel fruit in a slightly more restrained style with enough nuance to keep someone interested in a night of wines that dominated in the nuance and structure department. All that being said, it sure was a nice wine to end on. The 2012's are drinking well at this point but I still think these will be better with a couple more years in the cellar. — 8 years ago

An outlier from the evening's theme, but what a treat to taste. — 9 years ago

I guess I've taken a particular liking to it. An outlier but I think it's pretty good — 9 years ago

Domaine Romaneaux-Destezet (Hervé Souhaut)

Les Cessieux Saint-Joseph Syrah 2014

Love the acid and style of this wine. Didn't quite stand up against the richer wines in this flight, but again it's is own animal. Lots of carbonic character. Day two it lost that primary effervescence and showed much more weight on the palate. Definitely the outlier in the group. Would like to see this with at least 5 years of age. — 10 years ago

Wow, incredibly youthful with acids and focus. A brilliant outlier in a Corton tasting. — 10 years ago

Ramey Wine Cellars

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

An initial California 2012 look - no rhyme/reason...a little Cab, Prop. Red, Pinot and possibly an outlier or two. The rest are tagged the same. This one ranked #2. — 11 years ago

Mitolo

Reiver Barossa Valley Shiraz 2002

This was a fun outlier on the night from @Carl Fischer and although I think it’s 100% Shiraz it plays like a petite Syrah/Zin blend. As purple as wine gets. Ripe plum and full grainy mouthfeel. — 8 years ago

Château Léoville Barton

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1986

The Brett threw me. This was an outlier when pitted against rambunctious Cali Cabs. Very traditional, and perhaps the best foil to the rack of lamb. Thanks @Vickie Beuerle ! — 9 years ago

Much rounder and softer than expected. Less intense than most Aussie Riesling. Great producer and delicious wine but a bit of an outlier #pewseyvale — 9 years ago

Domaine François Raveneau

Blanchot Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 2000

Seth Morgen Long
9.5

The thing about Raveneau is at once it is both quintessential Chablis and an outlier, so consistently full, long, deep and full of dimension yet not shrill or overblown. It's in its own class. The sheer magnificence of this mature Blanchots, the aromatics, the intensity, the texture, the length is all quite perfectly aligned with the wonderful service and cuisine at Little Bird. Oily citrus, cereal dust, saline, ginger, lemongrass creme, subtle spice, this is what gratitude tastes like. Thank goodness for chicken fried trout and Raveneau. — 9 years ago

Sine Qua Non

Backward & Forward White Rhone Blend 1998

A total outlier among the whites and a special treat from @Shawn R it is not in everybody's wheelhouse and certainly not a casual poolside sipper. This is a studying wine. Open the book. Get out your hi-lighter. You will be tested on this later. Immediate petrol on the nose that gives way to marzipan, parker house roll and honeyed butter. There is a yeasty quality that predominates on the mid palate and is likely representative of its late stage development. This is on its denouement so drink now but stop to enjoy the unique ride. This is the woman with the little scar on her cheek that you can't get out of your head. You didn't appreciate her when you had your chance but now you remember her far more than the obvious hot ones with less substance and now you want another chance to show her you're not as superficial as she thinks. — 8 years ago

Valmur Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 2001

Paul Costigan
9.1

2001: Not the expected Valmur richness from the start. Surprisingly tart, like biting into a granny smith apple. Lively, yet puzzling with each sip. Where was the lemon lime zip, giving way to a lemon custard vanilla tart? Not this bottle. Continued to develop slowly, yet the edge never fully mellowed. An outlier, that I now want to try again. — 10 years ago
