Thank you to my good friend Andy Bunch for bringing this beer to try tonight. A rare treat for sure. Took a while to open up, bit man, it’s hitting its stride a couple hours later with notes of semi sweet chocolate, espresso liquor, brownie batter, vanilla, toasted nuts and almond oil. A rich brew with a 15%+ ABV. Black as old motor oil and super mouth coating. Yum yum yum. — 7 years ago
The ugly old man makes a damn good wine. — 7 years ago
Absolutely beautiful. Need to buy more of this. Doesn’t go well with nail polish remover in the same room! — 7 years ago
I rarely drink Porto, but man, this was a gem!! — 8 years ago
Old vines, man... Beautiful, big, rich wine. Mentholated, black fruit. Eucalyptus. Herbs. Not terribly fruit forward. Really complex. Gotta lay some down and see what happens. Really great. — 8 years ago
One of three offerings from Mad Fritz last night @ NVWTG. Not usually a stout fan, I thoroughly enjoyed this well balanced brew. Wish I had snapped pics of the others! Great beer with a great story. Serious craftsmanship at work. — 9 years ago
Wow - this is my first experience with aged Altesse, and man - can it go the distance. Nose has some oxidative notes to be sure, but for a decade old white, this has aged very gracefully, in a controlled and complexing sort of way. Rich and full, with excellent length - excites me even more about the potential and versatility of the Altesse grape. — 5 years ago
2013 Sami-Odi Syrah DW-OLD
Thought I’d open something from my favorite Australian producer, @fraser_mckinley, in honor of the start of the Formula 1 Season in Melbourne. (Nice start for my man Max Verstappen and the new Red Bull partnership with Honda). My first and only bottle of the 2013, decanted for 3 hours. 14.4% alcohol. It appears a deep, dark, black hole in the Zalto stem. Nose of dark berries, clove-and-cinnamon and dried fruits, with some forest floor and floral notes in the background. On the palate, rich dark fruits with a cedary tannin. Wonderful acidity. Full-bodied, fresh, rich and complex. Lengthy finish. My recollection is that Fraser told me that 2013 was a difficult year with the entire first fruit being destroyed by frost, and then there was a second set. Always amazes me that these challenging years always seem to produce the most memorable vintages. I’m a big fan of Fraser’s work. — 6 years ago
Smell: earthy fruity dark chocolate/blackberries
Taste: fresh sour. Cherry — 7 years ago
Man that is tasty.. even better than the last vintage. 144 yr old ungrafted pre-phyloxera bush vines, on sale for $19.. unheard of. This sucker is flamboyant on the nose with black cherry, violets, vanilla, chocolate and toast. The palate has a great balance with rich fruit, medium(+) tannins, gripping acid, and pretty high alcohol. Clearly a hot vintage in Toro, making some splendid but serious Tempranillo. — 8 years ago
Bought this from charming man with the nice smile and the stuffed fox for 11.50 euros. 100% chardonney old oak. Ouille! Creamy, acidic, well balanced, fruity, modern. — 8 years ago
The 2008 is the ‘Old Man’ according to Stella. Honestly, I don’t get her meaning, as this was pure class and extremely vibrant in the glass. A dark, rich display of red fruit gave way to wet stone minerality, savory spices, and leather. On the palate, I found silky textures contrasted by vibrant acidity, with persistent red fruits in a tense display that was full of energy and verve. The finish displayed tart red fruits and spice that clung to the senses while mouthwatering acidity worked to wash the palate clean. This is a gorgeous bottle of young Brunello — 9 years ago
Texas Red table wine. Enjoy with chicken sausage and spinach ricotta ravioli. — 5 years ago
It's a little sweeter than I'd like but man do I love me some cask flavor — 6 years ago
60 year old vines on this Grenache blend, man, super delicious. Cool blend with a hint of Tempranillo. 💵 — 7 years ago
This is still one of the steals out there as far as Chianti. If you want full bodied, not overly acidic Chianti, here's your man. As long as you like it rustic. Cured meats, clay pot, and old world goodness. — 8 years ago
Initial cherries on the nose, with rich berries and toast on the palate. Quite tannic but not overpowering, nice bottle with the old man! — 8 years ago
A six year old Vio that is still showing major youth. Still has a stoney grey straw hue. Bursting with peach and dry field flowers. Bright on attack and mid but has a beautiful touch of roundness and weight on finish that lingers dry stone. Man, quenching my thirst on this hot Ojai day. — 9 years ago

Man. This wine is a petulant genius child. When it was young was amazing. Now on open it’s a child hiding in the corner.
Nose at 2 hours just reluctantly gives you a glimpse. Reticent bastard. Just a peek of gorgeous flowers. But they are glorious.
Palate is gorgeous. Cherry flower more than cherry. I love you. Yes I do. So silky. So elegant. Yes you are holding back on me you annoying young genius bastard. But I am old and wise. And can enjoy your promise and can wait for it become apparent. Because I am old. And I have nothing left but patience. And you in the impetuousness of youth will be out lasted by me.
