A rich crimson red in colour. Cassis , bay leaf mulberry and notes of violets. On the palate black currant, restrained yet sweetish - see notes from a year ago in March 2020. Sam Middleton, part owner and winemaker likes to drink Quintets between 10 and 15 years of age although I have had much older examples from friend and longtime Mount Mary collector, Dr Peter Sklavos. One of Australia’s classiest Cabernets. Not as minty as Coonawarra or as herbal as Margaret River. Commemorates the passing of founder, Dr John Middleton in 2006 as on the label. — 5 years ago

Another fabulous Middleton Ranch Pinot Noir in this 2013. Lots of character and rich velvety cherry and plum. — 8 years ago

Tree Kilpatrick
Has a cool clarkia concinna painting on the label. Definitely eye catching. And it’s a Lake County wine. Always interesting to try those despite my great grandfather hating seeing all the grapes taking over in his backyard (near Middleton). Deep, dark color. A purple core and plenty of maroon. Smells of elderberry, rocks in creek, and fruit compote on the stove. Just a hint of wood oil. Flavors are strange and interesting. Flinty. Very dry. Plenty O’ tannins. Berries. Maybe elder and black currant jelly? Little Oregon grape meets huckleberry. Herbal side too. Even a hint of mint. This is a unique and ponderable Cab. Has some French vibes, but it’s also a bit American. — 3 months ago
