Bought a case of these on release for like (I think) $80 a bottle or so, opened a couple a few years later and was disappointed. I was told, “just wait.” And holy sh*t! Was that good advice. This blew my mind. If all Sauv Blancs/ sancerres tasted like this I’d have a new vice. Minerality out the wazoo, with perfectly balanced peach, grapefruit rind & melon notes…never cloying. ‘Las Alturas' Spanish for 'the heights', a fitting name, this vineyard located on one of the highest grape-growing benches in the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA. 4th gen Winemaker Joseph J. Wagner from family with farming & winemaking roots in Napa since 1906. Met Joe several times. Deep Ruby (darkest Pinot I have come across). Nice berry and floral spice aromas. The 2018 Isosceles is youthfully understated yet darkly alluring, with black cherry and spiced citrus nuances lifting from the glass.
