Little Mad Bird

Graci

Etna Rosso Nerello Mascalese 2014

Graci 2014 Etna Rosso, or as I call it Sicily's answer to Burgundy. Nice expression of the volcanic soil that is Etna. Bright acidity. Could use a little more time in bottle. Had with Roasted Chicken w Rapini and roasted sunchokes. This little bottle made that bird sing.

Chateau Montelena

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1982

I may be mad but this tastes so provencal, at this stage would have had it pegged as an aged bandol. Black olive, black fruit and initially a floral nose. Weirdly garrigue. What a wonderfully odd old bird. — 10 years ago

Domaine François Raveneau

Blanchot Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 2000

Seth Morgen Long
9.5

The thing about Raveneau is at once it is both quintessential Chablis and an outlier, so consistently full, long, deep and full of dimension yet not shrill or overblown. It's in its own class. The sheer magnificence of this mature Blanchots, the aromatics, the intensity, the texture, the length is all quite perfectly aligned with the wonderful service and cuisine at Little Bird. Oily citrus, cereal dust, saline, ginger, lemongrass creme, subtle spice, this is what gratitude tastes like. Thank goodness for chicken fried trout and Raveneau. — 10 years ago

Funtanaliras Oro Exclusive Restaurant Edition Vermentino di Gallura 2014

Wow! I had very little expectation from this wine but... I was totally wrong: perfectly balanced with well controlled acidity and the right amount of fruit flavor.
Tasted in combination with roasted calamari and spicy cream mad of basil, pimenta de Neyde pepper and yogurt.

Dirstelberg Riesling

Enjoyed a cozy glass of this more or less Spätlese style Riesling at Little Bird to go w a foie gras dish at Little Bird that was incoherently designed. The wine was lovely, rather delicate, both wet slate & tropical with bright passion fruit acidity. Too bad the wine was willing to dance but the the foie was a clumsy idea... — 11 years ago

Pre-move-mania treat with J, A&A. Evolved, a little sherried, butterscotch. It woke up-- and freshened up-- but not quite as memorable as the delicious Jungle Bird chaser. At least I'm finally posting this... From a photo lurking in Google Drive..., — 9 years ago

So so I want to be mad at this. But I can't, it's freaking delicious. While I do think the Granache could use a little bit more generosity than this, does this leave us to be more similar to Beaujolais than the Rhone , I still think it's awesome. — 10 years ago

Left Bend

Second of the two Left Bend reds sent over to us from Gary. Love the labels on these wines and the name of this vineyard, 'Vanumanutagi' which is a Samoan word meaning "Vale of the Singing Bird". Trust us this wine sings! Bright ruby red with purplish hues. Nose started off a little tight with just red cherries and a slight perfume, but as it opened up over the next few hours it developed some cinnamon, vanilla, baking spices and some light lead. Strong acidity on the palate, makes us this it is definitely packing a punch and can last. The strong acidity hides the alcohol well. Moderate tannins (6/10) and moderate body carried by the acidity. Strong attack of red fruits and cherries. As it had some time to breathe the palate developed some baking spices, slight caramel and herbs, all very subtle. Slightly drying finish from the acidity with a little wet rock feel. A ton of potential with this wine, we drank this on day one, two, three, four and it kept opening up and its body held together. With a few extra years this will definitely score a few more points. Drink now till 2026. — 10 years ago

Nest Egg Shiraz 2007

9.3

Blind tasting, wine number 4, bag number 3. Bright red and clear. Love the nose, black olives, cherries and hummus. Moderate tannins (6.5/10), and moderate body. Nicely integrated between the size of the body and tannins, but would love to try this in a few years by then hopefully the little bit of heat wears off. Nice amount of dark fruits as well. Lingering finish but is smoother than bottle number 5 and 6. My third favorite of the night. — 11 years ago
