Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1986

1986 vintage. Tasting like it was nearish the top on the downward slope. Unified palate push. That great old Bordeaux nose. Light-medium body. Ullage appropriate. The feminine characteristics that are the lifeblood of this producer almost completely absent with this bottle. Had this been blind, woulda speculated this to be a 1985-1989 upper-crust St. Julien. All that said, still very very nice. The near-perfect 1989 specimen tasted a little more than a week ago reminded me more of the previous encounters with the 1986 than this encounter with the 1986. — 2 years ago

Had the 2000 out of mag tonight. Signature green streak down the middle wrapped in left bank richness. When this producer is on, they are on fire, but when they aren’t, it’s so frustrating.

@Shay A Heard and agreed. Still waiting for the 1990 vintage to show age-appropriately but as of 6 mos ago, tight as nails.

Summerland

Paradise Road Vineyard Single Vineyard Collection Syrah 2005

2005 Summerland serial number 6043. Charred earth and meaty smoky loveliness that really reminded me of Cayuse for a moment. Bold terroir and a backdraft of black pepper on an extracted plummy black nasty fruit stuffed mushroom and peat cloud. Real depth of character stuff, where you really feel this wine has your back as your guns smoke and bluster from a wet foxhole. Straight cover fire for hours. Then you realize your brother is losing lifeblood, literally baking in a fever, and you are the one who gets to live with him in his greatest moment, shining like a flame. Another hour, and the sun has set, summer is over, the smoke is clearing to reveal a tired, injured if glorious wine that really was at its best in that precise moment, and adumbrates in the long shadow of death. — 11 years ago

Deep Valley

Mendocino Red Blend 2018

With Jay and Deb. Fabulous with grilled burgers on pretzel buns. The Deep Valley of Mendocino Contry is a unique wine growing region that produces exceptional wines. The headwaters of the iconic Rushion River provide the lifeblood for the valley’s remarkable grapes. This red wine blend is a bold and rich wine that pairs well with a range of dishes from hearty stews and grilled steak to cream-bases sauces. The Petite Sirah gives it excellent structure while the Merlot Syrah bring softness and delightful aromatics. — 5 years ago
