Château La Tour-Martillac

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 2010

Excellent well rounded...tannins smooth but present, high acid..earth/mushrooms...cherry, dark plums present and present which I expect for 2010. Just an absolute well balanced wine with our chicken stew fireside seating is on point. — 8 years ago

Ovello Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2011

9.2

CVed 3/16/17 Nebbiolo comp. High tone cherry notes on nose though still a bit closed. Acidic and firm on palate with tannins and good body with good length. Opened 11/21/17. Drinking very well. Cherry notes and elegance and liveliness. Upping 1 point to 9.2. — 8 years ago

Parigi Nebbiolo d'Alba 2014

This has so much friggin complexity for the modest $22 price point. For the Barolo fan and Barbaresco fan alike, this Nebbiolo over-delivers. The nose is so lovely and quite seductive - spiced dark chocolate, red licorice, cinnamon, brown sugar and clove. The palate is round but focused, high-toned cherry, floral notes, and more cinnamon baking spice. This is a stud. — 8 years ago

Ca' Rugate

Monte Alto Soave Classico Garganega

On Saturday night I was about to order a Vermentino but our server convinced me to try the Soave Classico, I was skeptical. He brought over a taste of both and didn't tell me which was which. Ugh. An impromptu blind tasting in front of my dinner companions.

Of course, I was set up and walked right into it. I ID'd the Soave as the Vermentino. That was the whole point. This Soave is not a thin, generic one trick fruit bomb. It's surpassingly complex with medium high acid, lemon, peach, apricot, and wet stones with a bit of salinity. Paired perfectly with white pizza and arugula salad.

Antica Terra

Ceras Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2011

Intense dried cherry, pepper, a touch of funk after it has been open awhile. Since she trained under Manfred, I was shocked to see the ABV is only 12.7! I have to admit here that I no longer purchase wines from Maggie - to be honest, lovely, well made wines, but I find her price point to be too high. Especially on the white and rose. But this was a reminder of how talented she is, and why in the past I bought a lot of wine from her. AnticaTerra, and Lillian. — 8 years ago

Aurelio Settimo

Langhe DOC Nebbiolo 2008

This delivers a heckuva a lot of Barolo character for a $30 wine. Beautiful high-toned cherries, roses, and gaminess on the nose. I can't stop smelling it. Only showing some of that on the palate with tons of grip on the backend. Very more-ish as Jancis Robinson would say. Serious value here - can't remember the last time something at this price point delivered this kind of magic. Post script - after about an hour, this sadly settles down into a smoother, but much less intriguing wine. Gaminess is almost gone. Still a good Nebbiolo, but not the specialness that was there before. Will it re-emerge with time? — 10 years ago

Tim at MacArthur's recommended it. He had the Barolo and Barolo Rocche Annunziata as well.

Stefano Belbo

Antico Monastero Barbaresco 2010

This is like the Beaujolais of Nebbiolos I've had. Clear, day bright, medium- viscosity, no sediment. Ruby color with a bricking to orange rim, medium concentration.
Nose: the wine is so reductive and fruit forward its unique. Very serious deep strawberry notes. Stewed strawberries, overripe strawberry and cherries. White and red rose petals. Fresh and dried. This wine didnt see a ton of oak seemingly. Some light barnyardy earthiness. Light leather and fennel seed notes.
Palate: medium bodied, ripe red cherries, cherry skin and pits, strawberries, even slightly jammy. Licorice and white flowers, leather and some clove like spice to it. Maybe some cedar, hard to distinguish. Med+ acid, high tannins, medium finish. Lovely wine for the price point.

Morlet Family Vineyards

Passionnément Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

15% alc.

Lots of (French) oak on both the nose and palate.
I could see this score high with certain critics based on the sheer size but I found it somewhat out of balance and have doubts it will ever "find its feet".

Still a VERY good wine but given the pedigree (and price point) I was expecting a bit more.

Lots of malo aromatic at first which blows off after some air so I would recommend to decant this boy. Nice strawberry/cherry component on the nose turns into a more & more herbal direction. Good acidity, strong tannins (should soften with some more time in the bottle), lots of herbal & stony components on the medium+ finish. A real character and one of the better wines out of my little Burgundy collection. Only drop of bitterness is the nowadays really high price point. — 9 years ago

Mount Langi Ghiran

Cliff Edge Shiraz 2012

Powerful, full bodied Aussie Shiraz but without being overripe or over extracted. High alcohol but balanced by lush fruit, grippy tannins and good acidity. Needs plenty of air but if you can be patient, give it at least 3 more years. Exceedingly good wine for its price point. — 10 years ago
