Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Champagne Chardonnay

🎄 Advent Halfy Calendar Day 22 🎄

🎅 Santa says “Two more sleeps boys & girls 😊 I hope you’ve all been good! I have so I’m going to pop these bubbles 😉”

📝 I say this has aged quick in the baby bottle and very oxidative reminiscent of a Bollinger with 10 years age - a good new find 👍

⏩ 🍾 Mrs E got Ruinart Blanc de Blancs NV

📍 R&L Legras Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut NV

Castello del Terriccio

Con Vento Toscana IGT Sauvignon Blanc 2004

So much better than expected. The acid had fallen off a bit but the texture was reminiscent of older Sancerre and overall quite pleasant. Drinking the cellar dry so we had to try it! — 7 years ago

Château Gruaud Larose

Larose de Gruaud St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1987

Not Bordeaux’s greatest vintage, however the wine was well cellared and served as a fun dive into Medoc with a friend who is passionate about the region.
Soft stewed fruit, but the wine was more so driven by an immediate rush of sweet milk chocolate on the nose upon opening / decanting. Structured, but palate was largely earth-driven with fallen leaves, wet earth, and iron. A wine that is clearly on the back 9, having its prime drinking window behind it. Fun wine to sip in the afternoon and enjoy a day off.

Enjoyed with a soft, brainy lobe of tempered Langres fromage.

Columella Liberatus Castro Bonae Spei Shiraz Blend 2004

This weekend will have a world Rugby theme starting with this South African red followed by wines from New Zealand and Argentina. Sadly Australia having fallen to #7 ranked in the world did not feature :( A great combination of fruit and savoury characters. A lovely fragrant plummy earthy perfume. Nice minerality with blackberry and raspberry flavours on a medium weight palate. A blend of 80% Syrah and 20% Mourvèdre. A world class Shiraz Blend not showing its 14 years and still a good cellaring future. Tasted again 23 weeks later on 23rd March 2019 with consistent notes. Tasted final bottle on 8th March 2020 with consistent notes. Better and fresher a few years ago. — 7 years ago

Pian del Ciampolo Toscana Super Tuscan Blend 2013

2013 - $40
Oh that dusty, grandma's attic Italian nose! Also, tons of fallen leaves, stewed fruit and almost Nebbiolo-floral aromatics. Acidity still holding strong on day 2. Pleasant, if a bit muted from what I expected from this famous wine!

Viña Real (CVNE)

Gran Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 1970

Raw leather, plum, blackberry, prune, anise, dried strawberry, cedar, campfire smoke, black peppercorn. Acid is still moderately present. Tannins have fallen off considerably.

Leakage from the cork. Wine about a quarter inch below taper of neck. Cork had no hope without a Durand. With ah-so it still went straight in-- better than falling apart though. Honestly, I thought this was a bad gamble but wine came out better than I expected. Not prime but still good. 91

Fondo Antico

Grillo Parlante Bianco Sicilia Grillo 2013

Lemon in colour. Notes of Orange peel and Quince on nose and palate. Medium to full bodied. Refreshing uncomplicated drinking. The base wine, Grillo, used in Sicily for the fortified Marsala - a style that has fallen out of favour in recent times. Tasted again 30 weeks later on 10th May 2019 with consistent notes as above. Tasted again on 9th October 2019 with consistent notes. Also notes of old apples and quince as previous. A delicious Mediterranean white and excellent QPR. — 7 years ago

Cain Vineyard & Winery

Cain Five Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2006

2006 Still tastes young, lots more life to live. Pine, cherry, black berry, forest floor (fallen leaves), good acidity, well integrated tannin, silkier, some bigger alcohol on finish so needs food. Rainy, cold vintage, with heat spikes, so drastic changes in temp...which isn't great. — 7 years ago
