Found buried in the cellar. Ripe blueberry, vanilla. Dropping my daughter back at Cleveland State for swim practice and realized she doesn’t have a corkscrew. Only a hammer and a screw. Where there is a will there is a way. Add corkscrew to the shopping list. Cork came out intact and in perfect condition.😊 — 6 years ago

Pristine condition bottle. Cork flew out revealing surprising amount of retained fizz. Roast peach/rust colour. Oxidised nutty, orange peel, caramel notes with long length.

Cork disintegrated, but otherwise no concerns. Very restrained with more fruit showing as it took on air. Looking forward to seeing how the rest of the bottles age. — 10 years ago

Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Neck fill and good cork. Immediate nose of cedar, anise, of course eucalyptus and even some hibiscus. It's deep in the glass and core was still tight, even bit tannic and firm acids. This vintage is drinking better now than the legendary 74's as some of that bigger vintage is falling apart. A real beauty! — 11 years ago

Thanks. I got my hands on a couple of 66s the other day with levels around the top half of the embossed brand. Don't have much experience with ullage in this bottle shape so that's reassuring to hear!

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1975

That was one tough cork to remove. Took me 15 minutes and several tools, but managed. Of course I kept this bottle too long, this is beyond its peak. That said, still a lovely Bordeaux and I am curious how the air in the decanter will help. A great wine and fantastic it kept that long — 6 years ago

Golrious balance. Cork was compressed and showing age, though I stored this in my cold cellar. Nose of yellow fruits and flowers. All of a piece, though feeling a bit spendy.
Happy Mother's day to my wife, paired w almond croissants and truffled eggs.

Very funky when open. The full was low in the neck and cork just crumbled, so not expecting much. But very rich about 30 minutes later and held on through the evening. Really nice. — 9 years ago

Château Montrose

Saint-Estèphe Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1970

Lower neck/high shoulder fill. Cork intact but crumbled as it was pulled out. The appearance was excellent – fresh, dark, deep, no sign of letting go at all. On the bouquet, there was a strong Cabernet perfume. Cassis, black fruits. The tannic structure was still very healthy. No trace of oxidation whatsoever. This Montrose lived up to its name as a long distance runner! — 9 years ago

Insignia Estate Grown Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2011

Well I am the only one drinking wine tonight, so it is a 375ml Insignia to the rescue. This was very monochromatic when I popped the cork. Let it breath for an hour and it is still pretty short on the finish. Does not exhibit the layers that a typical Insignia vintage exhibits. Don't get me wrong, it is still good just not as sophisticated as expected. Spoiled I know, but we must keep up our standards. — 10 years ago

Château Lafite Rothschild

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1953

From a great old looking bottle with a mid shoulder fill. Cork is fully saturated and the crud under the capsule had formed a strong seal. Slow-ox’d for a few hours, then decanted for an hour or two before taken to L’Escargot in Carmel. Amber tawny rims with a reddish tawny core. Crazy nose right from the start. Notes of sweet black cherries, tobacco leaf, plums, black pepper, ash and crusty wood, pencil shavings, some just unwrapped cigar and some menthol. Silky in the mouth with firm structure and soft but present acidity. Long and memorable finish. Outstanding performance over several hours. — 6 years ago

Tasted blind. Tawny color, translucent with amber rims. Notes of black cherry, cedar, some spice and a little barnyard floor. Sweet fruit in the mouth, with tannins fully resolved. Guessed 1955 Calon Segur. Perfect looking bottle, the cork revealed this bottle was reconditioned by the Chateau in 2000. — 8 years ago

Always a good bottle for me. Been counting and already had 5 bottle of this great value wine from the queen of burgundy. Still holding up good with smooth and elegant mouthfeel. Château Margaux

Premier Grand Cru Classé Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 1954

What a treat. From the company to the antics of the cork removal, all was fantastic. Not surprised with some immediate mustiness on the nose, giving way to a rich but smooth aged blue cheese, mushrooms, soy sauce, earth, and just a faint hint of dried red fruit. Over the next 20 minutes the glass development was out of control, changing with each and every whiff and sip. Earthy umami, oxidative, and and slightly stewed reds to begin quickly opened to nice dried strawberries on the palate and nose, and advancing to moderately subdued ripened strawberries and cranberries- after 61 years and still kickin with fruit! Amazing. Then after about 20 minutes of rapid metamorphosis, it gave in and decided to fade to a very pleasant sipper...awesome. — 11 years ago

A little rough in the aromatics. Cork was suspect, looked and smelled a bit funky. wine was otherwise youthful in the mouth with raspberry, tar, spice and plenty of lively acid. Have a few more '89s and think its time. overall a beautiful wine still but perhaps in aromatic decline. - 1989 vintage — 12 years ago
