Maybach Family Vineyards

Amoenus Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

The ‘Amoneus’ Cabernet Sauvignon by Maybach is sourced from a hillside vineyard located just west of Calistoga. A dense, glass-staining purple, this wine needs a two hour decant to be fully aroused. Once awakened the wine yields copious and layered dark fruits that are woven into shades of dark chocolate, roasted dates and creme de cassis that all shine brightly in the glass. Dense and decadent on the attack, the ‘Amoneus’ provides a luxurious mouthfeel. Chocolate covered espresso bean, tar, blueberry compote and suggestions of black currant cordial flavors all march together on the palate. While delightful in its youth, this will only get better with some bottle age. Drink 2020-2040- 97

Farella

Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Exactly what I expected and exactly what I wanted. Intense and expressive with copious amounts of brooding dark fruits, graphite, anise, eucalyptus, gunpowder, and violet on the nose with juicy plums, blackberries, spices, and cedar on the palate with silky tannins and big structure. So good. — 5 years ago

Napa Valley Chardonnay 2016

My wife grew up going to Babe’s, and so when we were up in the DFW area we had to visit one of their locations in Arlington. Thankfully it’s BYOB, so I got to swing by Winslow’s Wine Cellar and grab a chilled bottle of Chard for copious amounts of family-style sides and fried chicken. — 6 years ago

Vineyard 7 & 8 (Seven and Eight)

Estate Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Deep dark only core with a Ruby rim. Copious notes of mocha, blackberry and tobacco. Quite extracted, the mouth is full and intense; black and blue fruit, smoked meat and black pepper ride an integrated and balanced acidity. The finish is long with sweet, fine grained tannins. — 6 years ago

Domaine Auguste Clape

Renaissance Cornas Syrah 2011

Despite being from younger vines this was far less ready than the regular Cornas from ‘01. Floral and herbal aromatics, a bit of wet dog, red currant and black cherry syrup, copious chewy tannins. Could use a bunch of time but as an accompaniment to a hearty meal it’s mighty fine now. — 6 years ago

Big Table Farm

Laughing Pig Pinot Noir Rosé 2018

The 2018 ‘Laughing Pig’ Rose by Big Table Farm was aged in neutral oak barrels prior to being released in mid-April 2019. Showing off its rich, dark hue, the 2018 ‘Laughing Pig’ opens with serious aromatic range from shades of honeydew melon to citrus rind and copious ripe red fruits that all connect in the glass. The palate shows a silly texture and weight, yet retains a wonderful sense of elegance. Bright guava, nectarine, and cran-pomegranate with red cherry candy flavors collide with the bright sense of minerality. The exceedingly long finish accentuates this simply gorgeous new Rose. While delightful in its youth, this will cellar well for the next seven plus years. Drink 2019-2025- 93 — 5 years ago

Quilceda Creek

Galitzine Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

The 2007 Quilceda Creek ‘Galitzine Vineyard’ Cabernet Sauvignon is showing marvelously at more than a decade old. On the nose this shows copious dark fruits with graphite and creme de cassis aromatics that continue to build in the glass. The palate shows a seducyitve side with moderate tannins that round out following a two hour decant. Blackberry compote, mocha, sandalwood and chocolate covered cherry flavors all combine nicely. A stunning wine now, this will continue to show well for at least another decade. Drink 2019-2019- 96 — 5 years ago

Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015

ESF
9.0

Really spot on, pale yellowish-green with copious amounts of grapefruit and maybe some lemon, pineapple and something herbal and some saline, minerally and grassy around the edges. Beautiful acidic structure without being too nervy, and carried a decent with all the flavors thru the finish. — 6 years ago

Kongsgaard

Hudson Vineyard Syrah 2011

Dominated by old world aromas of charcoal roasted meats, black pepper, black olive tapenade, licorice, smoke, Asian spices, and some hidden ripe red fruit aromas that trickle through. A full bodied red with copious amounts of dark raspberries, blackberries, plums that seem to be balanced by a savory almost salty midpalate with refreshing acidity that continues on to the long lasting finish full of mineral notes and polished creamy tannins. — 6 years ago

Big Table Farm

Earth Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2017

The 2017 ‘Earth’ Pinot Noir is a barrel selection wine made by the talented Brian Marcy. Needing a one hour decant to be fully aroused, the wine slowly unveils copious red fruits that dance with peat moss and shades of white truffle on this expressive nose. The palate reveals a wonderfully silky texture that coats the mid-palate. Red currant jelly, wild blackberry cordial, peat moss and suggestions of cigar ash all mingle brilliantly on the palate. While downright delicious now, this seductive, yet well-balanced effort will cellar marvelously over the next fifteen plus years. Drink 2019-2035- 95 — 5 years ago

An outstanding showing, the 2017 ‘Silice’ Pinot Noir opens with an inviting nose of copious red and dark fruits that mingle with peat moss, and wild mushroom tones on the expressive nose. The palate reveals a marvelous texture and beautifully coats the mid-palate. Bright red fruits dance with citrus rind and volcanic earth undertones on the palate. While exceedingly delicious in its youth, this stunning new bottling will have decades ahead of it. Drink 2019-2035- 94 — 5 years ago

Tyler

Dierberg Vineyard Chardonnay 2013

Really extraordinary Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay, drinking at its peak. Has started to take on wonderful secondary character, with lots of honeycomb, hazelnut, and toasty brioche showing on the nose and palate. That makes the wine sound a lot more decadent than it is, though. At its heart, like all of the Tyler Chardonnays, this wine is first and foremost a masterclass in focus and precision. Even at the ripe old age of 6, with its contours slightly softened and its flinty reduction tempered, this wine is still wonderfully, vividly alive, with copious lemony acidity and fruit that still leans more towards tangerine oil and grapefruit. That this is still so piquant and salty and mouthwatering and more-ish after 6 years in the bottle is a real testament to the quality and the substance of these wines. — 5 years ago

Mount Veeder Winery

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Fresh copious amounts of eucalyptus inhaled, as my nose is encapsulated by my glass.

First sip is elusive. Cannot quote pick which dark fruit/ deep memory I can impart in this review, so I return quickly for another.

Eucalyptus cigars, blackberry seed, tamarind, cedar, cedar, pine box and cedar!

Lingering, is the sadness of winter, in the darkness of this wine, and the acidity that is tempered by that damn lovely cedar.

A touch of heat, yet one has to get burnt every now and then, to see what lies beyond, eh?

Paul Dolan Vineyards

Mendocino County Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Copious notes of blackberry, cassis, mint, and dark chocolate on the palate. Firm, grippy tannins on the finish. Balanced and polished. Aromas of violets and stewed fruit. Oak is present but not overwhelming. Lots going on in this $15 bottle and an outstanding value considering a lot of inexpensive domestic Cabs are one-dimensional flabby fruitbombs from my experience. Had it with a meaty pizza. 20-minute decant. Purchased at Costco. — 7 years ago
