Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of a couple of hours. The 2018 “Il Rosso delle Donne” pours a garnet color with a translucent core; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of ripe and tart, mostly red fruits: Morello cherry, raspberries, strawberry, roses, a whiff of horse blanket, red rope licorice, dried green herbs, and dry gravel. On the palate, the wine is bone dry with high tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. This is a slightly wild but positively gorgeous example of a Nebbiolo-based blend from Alto Piemonte. There’s an old school feel about this that completely charms the heart. Too bad there is so little of it: the entire Boca DOC has less than 50 acres planted to vine. Castello Conti only made 3912 bottles of this gem. Drink now through 2048+. — 7 months ago

Great value white. Crisp and light. — 5 years ago
Aligoté doré from the village of Bouzeron (which boasts the best Aligoté in Burgundy and an AOC dedicated to this grape), by none other than Aubert de Villaine, legendary codirector of Domaine de la Romanée Conti. From old, low-yielding, organically farmed vines on the appellation’s highest slopes, vinified in foudres and aged for 10-12 months. Bright, elegant, complex and mineral. Dry but delicate. Apple. This is the private label used by Garagiste for stuff from Italy. But the cork gives away the secret. 2015 is a low acid year but this one keeps its balance. Ripe macerated cherry fruit augmented by warm gravelly earth. Classic. Medium bodied and very pure tasting. Nice intensity but so balanced. Fruit, acid, tannin. — 6 years ago

Deep garnet with a tawny rim. A savoury earthy mushroom note coming through - also balsamic notes. Fading red cherry on the palate. An excellent Brunello from a good vintage, travelling well at 15 years. A fabulous food wine with homemade fettuccine. I will probably drink my last bottle in 2027/28 although I have a drinking window through to the early 2030s. — 3 months ago
