A stunner from the very first sip. Maybe the best Poyeux I've ever had - up there with the best Rougeards I've had. Sophisticated and refined texture, feminine and satiny like a fancy Pomerol - even Burgundian in some moments - flowing with pure, ripe, red berry fruit that retains its classy figure and composure despite its piercing primary intensity. The flavors beyond the fruit are classic cabernet franc and a pure STGT of a Loire red, with a vivid snap of cracked black pepper and forestal brambliness. Earthy and yet clean, even slick and shiny. Roberto Voerzio's Barolo Cerequio 2007 is pure seduction. Perfumed, there is a heady outpouring of rose petals, Madagascar vanilla, black cherries, Italian plum, tar, black tea leaves, and tobacco. The attack is forceful, though not without composure, boasting stunning power and a graceful, masculine energy. Taught, fine-grained tannins, and a structured core signifies long aging potential. Showing its age a bit. The rich intensity of what this used to be is starting to fade slightly. Must say that the brightness, the acidity, and the finish, regardless of its sort of muddled composure were fully intact and keeping this alive. That familiar smell of fruit aged a bit too long and getting pruny is showing a little. I let it sit out overnight and the rich nose left behind mainly shoe polish but the brightness and muddled fruit had opened up to be something more enjoyable. Whoever wrote the little tag next to this wine at the shop was perfectly correct in saying 'hard to tell where this is headed or how to make sense of it' — 10 years ago
