Colgin

Kapcsándy Family Winery

Grand Vin State Lane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Solid wine, and opened in the presence of a 14 Tusk, an 05 Scarecrow, 09 Oakville Winegrowers Cuvee, 88 Dunn, 07 Colgin IX, a 93 Harlan, and an 08 Pritchard Hill Chappellet. I'd say it was probably my 3rd favorite out of those (the 88 Dunn and 09 Oakville Winegrowers being the two Napa Cabs IMO that bested this one). You know you're doing right when a 12 Kapcsandy State Lane is third! This wine has it all going on. Smooth, still slightly youthful fruit sweetness present here. Luscious black fruit on the front and middle with a peppery finish. This wine seemed to be a very approachable drinker even for only six years old. I'd put it at 96 easily but would be interested to see how it would taste if corked and enjoyed tomorrow (service announcement: .it was gone rather fast!). Toasted tannin still present. Wine has incredible structure and depth. — 6 years ago

Everything a Melka cult cab should be this 2012 reminds me a lot of the Colgin Estate ix. Nose of Juicy dark berries and fresh cut flowers Nose is very floral and just outrageous. Palate is well structured and meant to age. Opens up with air to show concentrated mouth watering dark cherry and tobacco cut by cedar chips. Finish stays with u. Will be even better in years to come as tannins mellow but struts its stuff now. 98+ (this may be a 100 point wine in 5 years) — 8 years ago

Reserve St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

So this wine beat Harlan, Bond, Colgin, Scarecrow in a blind tasting, scoring in the top bracket with Dalla Valle Maya. Wow! Of all those others, I've only had the pleasure of Colgin. And expert taster though I am not, I also found this comparable to that experience. Speaks classic California Cab to me - nice structure of dark red fruit followed by some cigar/tobacco and finishing with long silky tannins. I volunteer for next blind tasting of this against Screaming Eagle, Harlan, et al.!!! — 9 years ago

Bryant Family Vineyard

Proprietor Grown Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2001

From the famed Prichard Hill estate vineyard, this 100% Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a cult wine, rubbing shoulders with Screaming Eagle, Harlan and Colgin. The nose is typical of Napa Cab, with rich aromas of steeped blackberries, cassis, saddle leather, spice box and carmelized brown sugar. On the palate, it's silky, sexy and nicely balanced. There is a lovely, polished interplay of fine tannins and glycerol, along with darker notes of saddle leather, cedar, and espresso beans. Medium plus finish. — 9 years ago

1999 Pahlmeyer Merlot. Side-by-side comparison with 2004 Colgin Jubilation during dinner w McC at S. Affair. This was thin, flat, and musty at first, but really came around in the glass. Fruit cake out and the wine softened a bit. Lacked roundness and was def not as good as the ‘97 Pahlmeyer we had a couple of weeks ago w J&J D. — 6 years ago

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

9.2

Tor Kenward specialized in single vineyard CS from a few top sites, but the “Napa Valley” bottling is a blend of all the vineyards he works with. For 2014 the juice is predominantly from Melanson vineyard from Pritchard Hill, home to some of the most exquisite CS bottles in all of Napa - Chappellet, Bryant Family, Colgin, and Ovid.
Rich in black fruits but laced with red fruit freshness and elements of dusty earth, herbs, chocolate, and raisin. Luxurious mouthfeel. Broad yet precise. A refined beauty.

A little tired. Some black fruits here, but a lot of vegetal notes as well. Didn't really do so hot especially sitting right next to an 01 Colgin that pretty much wiped the cab competition right outta the park. I definitely believe bottle variation is in order here, as 97 was a pretty darn good year for Napa cab overall and I would love to see what the bottle that was aging right next to this one tastes like. Love Seavey wines, and muchos gracias to Keith for opening this one. — 6 years ago

Bevan Cellars

Tin Box Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2011

Wine is a perfect example when u mix a fruit forward wine maker with a difficult and cold vintage. This is up there with Colgin and Abreu for the best of the 2011s which as a vintage weren't my style of wine except for a handful of exceptions. This wine has 0.0 green notes which I hate. It's nose is fresh cut Violet's and wild flowers. Palate is silky smooth (low tannins) notes of mountain berries but without the usual Bevan fruit forwardness. Nice acidity makes the mouth water but not at all offensive. Nuanced notes of dark plum and pipe tobacco make an appearance as well. I can't see this getting any better with age. It drinks like an aged Bevan already. Beautiful wine. Prob the wine of the vintage ahead of the handful who did well in 2011. Well done Russell! — 8 years ago

@"Odedi" im a tough scorer. Only rated two wines ever a perfect 100. I thought this was among the best bevans I've ever had. I thought the 2012 mcgah and the 2013 sugar loaf edged this out although the sugar loaf isn't comparable in style the mcgah was had a pinch more fruit if I recall correctly but plenty of nuance as well.

Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

This was WOTN before we opened a 2010 Colgin XI! Still fairly young but several described this as being smooth. Dark fruits, soft tannins and no hard edges, unfortunately my last bottle of this particular vintage/vineyard. It can easily age for another 5 years, but I don't know why you would want to given how good it is drinking now. — 9 years ago

Clos Erasmus

Priorat Grenache Blend 1994

This wine, made from a blend of very old vine Grenache and younger vine Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon grown on terraced vineyards, is among the most exciting wines I have tasted. Unfortunately, only 300 cases are produced, all of which is exported to the United States. It is aged in 100% new French oak casks and bottled without fining or filtration. 1994 is considered to be one of Spain's all-time great vintages, so it is not surprising that this wine possesses more potential than the exceptional 1993 and 1992. Try to imagine a hypothetical blend of Petrus, l'Evangile, Rayas Chateauneuf du Pape, and Napa's 1993 Colgin Cabernet Sauvignon. The color is an opaque black/purple. The nose offers up spectacularly rich, pure aromas of blackberries, black-raspberries, minerals, and subtle vanillin from new oak barrels. Extremely rich and dense, with unbelievable levels of concentration and extract, this amazing wine is a strong candidate for a three-digit rating when it develops more maturity in 5-8 years. Since it is a newly created wine, there is no track record established for ageability, but a wine such as this should keep for 20-25 years. This is one of the most exciting young wines anyone could possibly taste. Awesome! — 10 years ago
