Clos Vougeot Grand Cru Pinot Noir 1983

Wow! What a nose that kept building in the glass showing red cherry, strawberry, forest floor, sweet & savory spices, earth, leather & floral notes. Very impressive showing for this 37yr old Roumier. — 5 years ago

Domaine Bizot

Clos du Roy Marsannay Pinot Noir

This started off as unassuming and maybe slightly reticent. After 1-2 hours, the nose gave away incense, which is an aromatic quality I adore from Bizot. Dare say the nose beat out the Roumier, Rousseau, and Leroy that night. Not saying this producer is clearly better, just this instance. — 7 years ago

Cuvée Le Berceau St. Joseph Syrah 2012

9.5

So young but for my money it's hard to find a better St. Joseph. Yes this is easily on Gonon level, but different like Rousseau and Roumier are. It's a dark color. Almost black. Stunning nose of crushed granite, fresh underbrush, black fruits, minerals galore, leather and so much more. Nuanced and complex as great St. Joseph can be. The palate is deep with big black fruits, significant ripe and sweet tannin and a long juicy finish. This is obviously young but has all the parts to be one of the best wines of the vintage as the finish lingers for a long time which hints at a very long future. Will update as it aerates. Sick for now.

AFTER 5 HOURS -The nose is like a big drop of blackberry juice combined with super granite tones some herbs. Really complex. The palate is epic. Huge fruit, great freshness, firm tannins. Gets very nook and cranny. Needs 5 years.

Domaine Ponsot

Cuvée Vieilles Vignes Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Pinot Noir 1991

Dark ruby with tawny rims. Old style funky burg nose with black cherry, clove, and dirt. Rich ripe fruit in the mouth. Feminine when compared to a more masculine Roumier Bonnes Mares next to it. Awesome wine that can improve with more age. — 9 years ago

Les Beaumonts Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Pinot Noir 1985

A rare treat and an immaculate bottle. Intense dark fruit, almost brooding on the nose. Gorgeous black cherry and plum with hints of iodine and some gnarly notes of underbrush and a slight tang of salinity. This is very elemental still in some ways but much of the fruit is in place and secondary notes are shining through. Really gorgeous and intense and an incredibly well kept bottle. What a surprise… I hope I get to encounter this unicorn again. You couldn’t ask for a more compelling bottle. — a year ago

my favorite Suchots and from a great vintage. Still young, barely beaten by a Roumier Bonnes Mares. More red fruited than dark, really good Burgundy. — 6 years ago

Volnay Pinot Noir 1981

Always loved Ponnelles wines from the 40's- 60's These older btls were thought to be made by Georges Roumier. Drank a lot of great ones at Berns until they ran out and have found a few btls at auction. This btl had dried cherry, strawberry, blood orange, rose petal, earth, iron and Vosne Romanee spice. — 8 years ago

Have heard about the Roumier connection before but haven't seen any direct sources on this - do you know any? I have some unbelievably great 37 Musignys from Ponelle - would make sense if G Roumier had made them.

Hey Eric, Congrats on your stash of 37 Ponnelle Musigny's. They should be amazing! I have always heard that the older Ponnelle wines 40's & 50's were made by Roumier from the somms at Berns as the wines were always stunning. There was a small article in Bill Nanson's Burgundy Report Spring of 09 where he referenced Georges oldest son Jean Marie was married to Odile Ponnelle and there was a question sent in asking about Roumier's affiliation with the Ponnelle estate back in the 40's - 50's. He referenced that George was working the Musigny plot under a metayage agreement & it may have been the Ponnelle plot. Heading to Berns tonight and will let you know if I find out anything additional. Cheers!
