Chateau Feuillet

Valle d'Aosta DOC Fumin 2016

My first fumin. Dark fruit, earth, spice, leather. For a wine that was 6 years old, it still had a remarkable Alpine freshness to it that I found to be very exciting. Will definitely try others! 90% Fumin, 10% Syrah. 8/14/22. — 3 years ago

One of the best I sell that has somewhat of a cult following. It’s one of those wines that seems so familiar but is made from an odd grape in an odd place. But man does it work. Nose is floral and lifted. Gorgeous tiny berry mountain alpine fruit. It’s intense. Deep and grapey initially but it’s got substance. Incredibly clear and vivid minerals. Just arresting and original aromas. Superb concentration and what an awesome velvety texture. Superb depth and freshness. Stunning clarity and purity. Velvety tannins. What a showing. Best bottle of Rutissons I’ve ever had. — 4 years ago

Costa della Sesia Spanna Nebbiolo 2013

Alpine clarity... roses, bright cherry, rustic notes of forest floor and mushrooms. Perfect with rich Northern Italian food. Vintage charts are generally different than Piemonte... would love to try the 2011. — 6 years ago

Les Filles Vin de Savoie Chignin-Bergeron Roussanne 2016

A transportative wine. Honey and almonds on the nose. The palate’s fresh and mineral. But it has that alpine character that transports you to the mountains. Nothing else like it. Bought from Fass Selections. After an hour gets much more complex. This is great but yet very different. An anti ennui wine. — 7 years ago

What a knockout nose. Huge berry fruit. High toned and very precise. Palate it silky with layered and juicy fruit with a bright fresh character. Super crunchy Alpine goodness. Amazing freshness and an appealing opulence as well due to the warmth of 2015. So balanced. — 9 years ago

@Tim Herrmann nope. Slams shut in an hour and tannins come through. Gets more complex and floral but I'd hold off for 2-3 years

La Garagista

Damejeanne Vermont Rouge Red Blend 2018

Another super interesting wine by Deirdre Heikin. This blend is 90% Marquette and 10% La Crescent. Two northern american grape variety and the wine shows that non vitis vinifera varieties can make very good wine. The nose is a bit foxy at first, and the taste is then very interesting, good acidity level, slightly sour, notes of herbs and berries but still very round. This profiles definitely reminds me of alpine wines such as Mondeuse or even l’Etraire de la Dui, although these are vitis vinifera.

Sign of a real good wine: this bottle only got better on day 2 and 3...

Great job by pionneer La Garagista!

La Kiuva

Arnad-Montjovet Nebbiolo 2016

Very few accessible nebbiolos are as consistently magical to me as examples from Valle d’Aosta and Alto Piemonte. This local clone, Picotendro, shows super alpine and earthy here, with a clarity of red fruit that ties the palate together. Significantly more restrained than its southern neighbors. For <$25 just simply gorgeous. — 6 years ago

Koehler-Ruprecht

Kabinett trocken Pinot Noir 2014

Rad Spätburgunder from the Pfalz; Koehler-Ruprecht never steers me wrong. Bracing and a bit rustic yet still elegant. Pours a medium (-) ruby garnet hue. Benefits from a tiny bit of air before serving but not like, necessary to decant it either. Wild raspberries and strawberries, blood orange peel, fennel seed, woodsy spice and birch bark, mushroomy, forest floor earthiness, and some floral rosehip character on the nose. The palate has more bracing, alpine red berry fruit, woodsy spice, rose floral character, and forest floor, supported by lively, medium (+) to high acid, and medium (-) tannin. Light to medium (-) body. Solid stuff. In a nice place right now, maybe would peak in a couple years but no compelling reason to hold on to it much either. — 8 years ago

Valée d'Aosta Prié Blanc 2013

Alder Yarrow
9.2

Sticking with the “great wines from grapes you’ve never heard of” theme for a while longer, why not join me for a sip of this alpine gem. Grown in the northerly reaches of Italy’s Valle d’Aosta, just over the border with France and Switzerland, and in some of Europe’s highest altitude vineyards (1200 meters) this wine is made from the Prié Blanc grape. Prié Blanc is the region’s only indigenous white grape, and is rarely found within the Valle d’Aosta, let alone outside of it. Vibrating with mineral intensity, the wine tastes of green apple, lemon cucumber, dried honey, and a hint of herbs. Electric acidity and a sort of peach-pit tanginess linger in the finish. Because the region is mostly tiny growers, Cave Mont Blanc is a cooperative, and a very high-quality one at that. — 4 years ago

Quintessence de Mondeuse 2016

Man I love this wine. It has that plummy easy to drink fruit combined with a bit of alpine wildness. Some hint of pine. Tanins still a bit grippy but that’s ok. Such sweet juiciness on the finish. Long cherry with hint of pine finish. Man I could drink two bottles in 10 minute. So good and such a great change of pace from pinot noir and Syrah.

Bought from fass selections.
