Tanuki Cider

Newtown Pippin

Tanuki cider. Newton pippin single varietal. Turning into one of my favorite California cider companies. So clean but with enough complexity and funk to make them very interesting. High acid on this one but just outstanding apple flavors and tannins. Worth seeking out these ciders. Batch 2020+21 #16/30 — a year ago

Ronchi di Cialla

Colli Orientali del Friuli Schioppettino di Cialla 2012

Asta is a trendy neighborhood restaurant in Boston's Back Bay. The menu is simple insofar as you choose from five or eight courses. We opted for five. The first course was a warming cheddar and beer soup. A ginger squid and foam dish was unusual and tasty in equal measure. Then came a sweet potato with an apple cider vinegar sauce. The apex was slow cooked beef that looked like it had been done sous-vide. Something called Interstellar was a bonus course - a parsnip purée with cocoa and popping rocks - a dish for the New Year. The treacle pudding was rich, comforting and delicious.
We opted against the wine pairings, instead ordering this Schioppettino from Friuli. Apparently this winery rescued the varietal and champions it. Not sure if this is true... it is light bodied but has earthy characteristics. Like a cross between Gamay and Syrah. Quite tasty and high acidity, which helped when pairing with a curious selection of dishes.

Honey Mead

This was my first time trying mead. I thought it was waaaaay to sweet for me at first. It comes with 2 mulling packets. So I gave it a try and it tasted great hot :) with the mulling spices it tasted less sweet like apple cider — 7 years ago

Cloudy Bay

Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

I'm led to believe that this is pretty unfashionable at the moment but I couldn't give less of a shit. A great, pure wine that gives you exactly what you ask for. A light greenish hue; not getting much grapefruit but lots of cider apples and perry pears, with a touch of cat's piss and maybe a hint of freshly cut (lightly damp) hay and fatty cheese rind; plenty of acidity, apt minerality, and a lovely lingering palette-cleansing freshness. Our house pour for fish and chips with mushy peas and my home made tartare sauce. — 9 years ago

ZBO Ricca Terra Farms The Riverland Zibibbo 2019

Trying to introduce J to the weird and wonderful world of skinsies. While I can't say I've got a convert this time around, the little study certainly provided some food for thought. Spectacular nose which J enjoyed too - Dried apricot, bruised apple, mango, white pepper, clove, fresh rose, and ginger. As with a lot orange wines for new drinkers, the palate's where J got turned off by. Kind of cider-like and a little "fuzzy", with good grip and an acetic zing. There's just enough fruit to keep the savory chicken essence elements at bay. Finishes quite earthy and acidic. I would say this is not a particularly challenging skinsy, but not an introductory one either. Although it's quite nice on the occasion, I have to note that I usually like this cuvée more 🤔 — 4 years ago

Is “skinsy” Tan-generated or is that a common reference in KL? And, may I steal this pronoun for personal use?

@romo Hahaha. I think it's a pretty common term for skin contact/orange wines in Australia. Definitely not an original 😂

This is a semi-dry blend of mead and hard cider, weighing in at 14% alcohol. It tastes like apple-tinged Ethiopian tej. — 9 years ago
