Vinha Do Fava

Quinta do Vallado

Vinha da Granja Douro Red Blend 2018

Extremely balanced black fruits, licorice, vanilla and tons of milk chocolate. Rounded tannins. Just a really nice drop. Best dry red on the Portuguese trip. — 6 months ago

Quinta do Fojo

Vinha do Fojo Douro Red Blend 2016

We had it with dear friends in Rio last August. Very dark rubi robe, nose of crushed flowers and asian spices, a hint of anise. Very rich and bold in the mouth, lots of fruit and very polished tannins. Great stuff. Looking to see if we can find it in the US. — 2 years ago

Quinta do Côtto

'Vinha do Dote' Douro Red Blend 2017

Dark red robe, nose of cherries and tobacco, very balanced and fresh in the mouth, medium body and length. We like it a great deal and was very consistent with prior notes.

Vinha Do Fava

Peninsula de Setubal Touriga Nacional 2021

From Laithwaites. Almost perfect, perhaps just a smidge too sweet but the quality pushes through so that doesn't matter too much. — 9 months ago

Monte da Ravasqueira

Vinha das Romãs Alentejano Syrah Blend 2021

This wine is an example that price has nothing to do with quality. Lots of fruity sweetness balanced with acidity, and with vanilla and tobacco. — a year ago

Quinta de Santiago

Vinha do Chapim Monção e Melgaço Alvarinho 2021

Really delightful. Zest and spark on the front but ends with some minerality and dryness that begs another sip. Delightful w the ceviche we enjoyed. 👍🏼 — 4 months ago

Akra Chryssos

Santorini Dry White Wine 2022

Popped and poured. The 2022 “Dry White Wine” from Akra Chryssos was a brilliant capstone to our Hellenic adventure. The winemaking at Akra Chryssos leans toward natural but is more accurately described as extremely light-handed. The Somm explained that these wines do see some barrel but only for a short period and all are used. Some of the fruit is sourced from vines over 200 years old.

The 2022 vintage pours a striking pale salmon color which is, apparently, unusual for this wine as previous vintages were a more traditional straw color. I wondered if this vintage had seen some skin contact however, it has not. The Somm at Pharoah had asked her supplier about it and the only information they could offer is that the aging barrels had previously held a red wine. The nose is stunningly powerful. Bright, fresh pineapple, star fruit, lemon, honey and crushed rocky minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with high acid. Confirming the notes on the nose. The finish is long and saline. This was a divine pairing with a variety of fare including fava beans with anchovy, roasted wild greens with anthotyro cheese, grilled octopus and red snapper savoro.

I've been watching all your posts during your trip, and I'm glad to see the Greek wine offers are strong. That said, I'm glad to not be seeking any out, or I'm afraid I'd be chasing a cellar full of another region of wines...

@Severn Goodwin I expect some prices for Assyrtiko will become insane within our lifetimes because the land is the size of a postage stamp (Santorini and Tinos) and both of those islands are producing world class whites.
