Domaine Hippolyte Reverdy

Sancerre Pinot Noir 2018

Sancerre Rouge! It’s not always easy to find (especially in the Midwest), but it’s always enjoyable. A Pinot Noir-based wine from Sancerre AOC of the Central Vineyards region in Loire Valley, France, which is most famous for its Sauvignon Blanc, but also makes excellent Pinot Noir (representing only 10-20% of wines produced in this area).

This wine is medium ruby. It has medium(+) intensity of fresh and youthful fruit aromas and flavors that include bright red cherry, strawberry, and cranberry notes, also tulip, vegetal, and wet stone notes. The acidity is medium(+), the wine is medium-bodied, it has medium tannins, and high alcohol. Words that come to mind are elegant, fruity, vibrant, balanced. The finish is medium.

Domaine Hippolyte Reverdy, Sancerre Rouge, vintage 2018, ABV 14.5%. Ordered through @kermitlynchwine at $31.00 / bottle.

La Bruja Avería Rozas de Puerto Real Grenache 2015

We’ve been talking about this producer for a while, so excited to have found the appellation level, even if the vineyard designated bottles are few and far between. Begins with all graphite and granite on the nose, sharp and clean. Opens into reserved fruit on the palate and earthy florals like tulip or orchid. More time in the glass allows for a bit of a saline and meaty character to appear. Whole cluster, but you wouldn’t know it right away, the structure is decidedly not oak tannin, angular, but not overwhelmingly so. Paired with an arrabiata sauce, which softens the white pepper, brings out the red fruit, and surprisingly doesn’t negatively showcase the alcohol content. It’s enticing! Keeps ya checking back for more. — 7 years ago

Sela Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2012

Well, tonight is a definite two-fer. This is very good, to me, in that I'm getting NO dill on the nose, but plenty of other pleasant aromas. Not that I hate dill, it's great with fish, or potatoes with butter, but I'm tired of it in Rioja wines.

This beauty has fresh blackberry scents, with pepper, anise, and roasted meat notes, with more of the same on the palate. Medium alc, medium tannin, medium+ body, great finish, medium acidity. Tulip the cat-approved. Excellent!

Another wine from my Israeli Collection. :) Very tasty, with strong fruit (a plum, a blackberry), a leather and a chocolate. But the tannins are mild, and the finish quite long. — 5 years ago

Bourgogne Chardonnay 2016

Nose has under-ripe papaya, pineapple core, cut yellow apple, nondescript white florals and dry sandstone.

Palate has ripe pineapple core, lemon zest, light vanilla, pear puff pastry, yellow apple peel with slightly chalky notes to the medium finish. Excellent.

Testing out our new Gabriel Glas stemware tonight; almost like a (tulip) Scotch glass with a stem, really concentrating the aromas and with a wider bowl it's almost self-decanting. This was a great bottle to test them out.

I've mentioned before, never pass up the entry level wines of serious producers, they are great values, as their quality should be spread across the brand. So I'll be happy to drink the Bourgogne of anyone who also happens to make a Bâtard-Montrachet.

Just Upper Galilee Merlot 2016

Post-show bev. Goes down easy. It’s that hint o’ green that keeps it flowing. Not too tannic, not too much of anything—which is to say there is enough. Totally pleasant. It’s like watching Sesame Street as an adult. Won’t challenge your brain but will be pleasant and give you, if not the warm fuzzies then at least a bit of alcohol-induced warmth. If I needed four glasses at a Seder I could. Oh wait you wanted real notes? If you didn’t stop reading now.
WSET-ish style:
Eye: medium ruby, thick tears Nose: cherries, huckleberries, a hint of asphalt and a lick of arugula. Palate: dry, medium acid, medium minus tannins, high abv, medium body and flavor intensity, cherry cordial, blueberry pancakes (no maple but vanilla tinged, green pepper, green...apple? Is that a Granny Smith in my merlot? May be. Medium finish.

Easley

Sweet Tulip Moscato

This is the best example of a grandma wine that I have ever seen, the label screams grandma decor, and this wine is so sweet and girly; and every grandma I know drinks very sweet wine. Of course Easley puts out some of the sweetest wine, which have a low enough alcohol content to enjoy the whole bottle alone in one sitting. — 8 years ago

Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2010

WTF Barbaresco, paid C$41 for it, expected nothing near this quality. Asphalt-tar-laden nose bathed in rose-and-tulip florals. Wide beam of tannins. Clean, crisp but smooth and beautifully articulated layers of leather, light asian spice. Class-in-a-glass. Peaked at an hour after decant, sole disappointment was that it started to break down around 4 hrs in. This is ready with decant, but has stuffing for cellar time. — 9 years ago
