Château Musar

Bekaa Valley Red Blend 2005

This red took a full 2 hours to open up, but the cedar, spice, raspberry and young leather aromas are growing, gradually, in intensity. Now (2 hrs later) the spice and vivacity are off the freakin chart! Very youthful, well-balanced, nuanced. Old school Bordeaux-like, but seems higher in acidity. However, while the acidity is medium+, it is tempered by full, red fruit, 13.5% abv, present but non-intrusive tannins, and a medium-bodied texture with excellent length (over 1 minute). The other factor is the one that says "Wow!", and that is definitely true here. Memorable and unique, I must get more for the wine fridge. — 9 years ago

Château Margaux

Premier Grand Cru Classé Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 1978

This was amazing. Such great black fruit and notes of tar and cedar. This is a true Grand Vin. Briefly decanted to settle and didn't lose much. Still some slight acids and tannins. Ultra smooth. — 10 years ago

Opus One

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1990

André Guérin

True story: at some point in this bottle's 23 years of aging, the cork sank into the bottle. When I saw that that had happened, I thought I'd lost this treasure. I thought it had to be bad, but nope. This legendary wine withstood the test of time! Even without a cork intact, the wine stayed really, really good. Thank goodness and yummmmm-y! — 12 years ago

Château Mouton Rothschild

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1966

Super-weird bottle. Mid-shoulder, crumbly cork, and the colour of freshly pressed strawberry juice - extremely pale as slightly cloudy! The immediate scent was quite off-putting but after 30 minutes it stormed back! Scents of autumn mulch, burning vine roots, sour cherries, and raspberry compote. A weird sourness and heady acidity on the front of the palette but it still keeps together well. Clearly badly kept but still really interesting to drink! A true testament to The quality of Mouton under the stewardship of the late Baron. I wonder if this is what some of the better kept bottles might be like in 100 years' time!? — 9 years ago

Insignia Estate Grown Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2007

Impressive wine! Decanted it for 30 min. Checked it at opening again at 30 min but it opened up around 50 min. Full and complex with strong black fruit, cocoa, and oak spice. This is still a baby in terms of maturity. As always Insignia delivers as true as a Bordeaux first growth would, which was their model from inception. — 10 years ago

My favorite nightly habit. A true jewel for its price tag $19 most places and you will definitely think it's twice the price with its berry taste and rich texture. — 10 years ago

True prep for my IPO seminars at the Aspen Classic: kind buddy brings Bryant Family ’01. Cork shatters, no coffee filters available, but kitchen strainer rescues. Glorious wine: oriental spiced nose, cashmere texture. Has many years of life left. — 10 years ago

Paragon Vineyard Chardonnay 2014

I have had a Chardonnay from Paragon Vineyard before, and this reminds me of it, quite a lot. It’s a SIP certified sustainable growing site and winemaker Christian Roguenant gets a nice full mouthfeel from the lees and the oak.
The straw-colored wine shows quite a bit of minerality on the nose, to be expected from Edna Valley grapes. The wet rocks and lime aromas are always a pleasure, as the are here. On the palate, there are tropical tones and plenty of citrus along with the beautiful oak effect - the wood is used in a very tasteful way. I vacillate between liking oaky Chardonnays and those with none. This one hits in the middle of the range and could be my favorite - for a while, anyway.

Remember if it's not from Champagne, France it's not really champage, it's just bubbly wine.
