Niagara Peninsula Merlot 2018

I had the Vin Nature version of this wine, 2018 Twenty Mile Bench.
Quite frankly exceptional, no additives,natural ferment and neutral barrels, unfiltered and unfined. Just a perfect expression of this varietal.

The Fifty Niagara Peninsula Chardonnay 2016

A nice Niagara Chardonnay. Quite full, but not overly rich if that makes sense. You get a bit of sensation from the barrel fermentation but there is no apparent oak, just body. Good acid but one smidge less cohesive on the finish than I’d like. Still nice. — 7 years ago

Highliner Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir 2021

I couldn’t pass up picking up a bottle of the “Sideways” 20th anniversary bottling of Hitching Post’s Highliner. Aside from the movie recognition, it’s a damn good Pinot, though a bit heavier in style than others. Vivid, fresh flavors of cranberry and cherry with a bit of spice. Delicious. Fruit sourced from three different vineyards in Santa Barbara County. 100% Pinot Noir. 4/28/25. — a year ago

All fruit. Enough acidity to carry it through another decade. Please don’t wait though.

As Mike said, we both agree this is the best 1988 Bordeaux we’ve ever had. With that being my birth year, I’ve been fortunate to try quite a few. To my surprise, the wine gets a 9.5 in profile (seriously impressive), but it also gets a perfect 10 for the company it was enjoyed with and because Mike knew this was a special bottle for me. What a generous and thoughtful gesture.

Compared to the 1988 Lafite I had a few years ago (green and lean), this was a total knockout! Mouton being on the slightly bigger side of the spectrum, I think the ‘88 vintage benefited their style. Fruit is so vibrant. Deep red in the glass. Soft red berries, black cherries, mix of old red and black currant. Very floral…violets, roses, potpourri. Sweet herbs and leather. Nimble. What an experience, and one I hope to experience again! You have my deepest gratitude,
@Mike R !

Also, how fun was it to compare this versus the 1986
@Shawn R brought! That bottle was an absolute smoke show, and totally in the zone! Main difference between the 1986 and the 1988 was a deeper, more rich profile with the 1986, as expected. But I still can’t get over how good that 1988 was!

I think if you read this nonsense I post, you know how I feel about this producer, past & present. This 07 is outstanding & top of its bell curve. It is so good to revisit these great vintages of Caymus Classic.

This is fresher than the 97. It is rich/lush, cassis to currents, ripe, blackberries, black raspberries, black plum, raspberries & strawberries. Dark chocolate, mocha, classic, beautiful, Caymus Classic spice that I miss dearly in their new wines, black licorice, fudge, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg & vanillin, most top soil, limestone, dry herbs, dry tobacco, barrel shavings, taut leather, volcanic grey clay, dark, fresh & slightly withering flowers, violets, beautiful round acidity, balance, structure, nice tension and elegant finish that last minutes and falls on spice and evoluted earth tones.

This bottle is in fine shape. Still strong and will last another 10 years of fine drinking. Phenomenal vintage and time to enjoy.

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1982

This is a tough one to rate. A 1982 and it drinks beautifully. Not on the decline at all, but happy I opened it for a nice post Xmas meal. The dark berries, leather and tobacco flavors blended and mellowed into a nicely rounded balanced flavor burst that comes out after an hour plus in the decanter. A truly great wine. — 5 years ago
