Hipping is exotically fruity, with some leesy reduction at this juncture; Pettenthal is the oddball, aged in barrique to draw out citrus fruit and roundness from a tight, mineral wine; Orbel is the complete package, a tannic and racy white showing equal parts fruit, floral, and Roterhang minerality. An interesting common thread through these wines is a distinctive herbal/spice character, which reminded me of a funky Belgian witbier or tripel, presumably attributable to ambient yeast populations and soil expression. — 9 years ago
In phenomenal shape. Minimal ullage at <2cm and great depth of colour. Nose of black plumbs, morello cherries, blackberries, and lightly peppery coeur de beuf tomatoes with a layer of freshly dug black farm soil underpinning the fruit. Still tannic, though it's well integrated, and a poised thread of vibrant acidity running thorough the palate.
Fantastic for a village level wine! — 9 years ago
The 2012 Matthiasson Ribolla Gialla is deep gold, the sort of intense, primary Cadmium yellow that is a common thread in Henri Mattisse paintings. It's slightly hazy too, from prolonged fermentation on the skins and stems, with concentrated notes of Bosc pear, preserved lemon and a touch of bitter almond. In the mouth, there is ample concentration and a bit more structure than expected, the finish shows a streak of chalky minerality and a pleasant savory character. 12.8% ABV — 10 years ago
I was going to wait to open this but the negative commentary thread on the wine berserkers forum lead me to open this bottle. The wine was excellent it was well balanced: freshness fruit and acidity. Most of the negative comments are from individuals not receiving their wines in a timely manner but the negativity seems have found its way into the reviews. Based on my experience with this particular wine the quality is high. I hope Ray Walker solves his distribution problems (as it this writing his website was not operational). — 9 years ago
2014 has come to fruition!! Brown sugar beaches awash in maple nut, peach stone, amarula fruit and cinnamon bread aromas knitted tightly with golden malt thread. Perfect texturally, velvety brown sugar, cedar, sweet tobacco, vanilla bean, chocolate milk, vanilla extract on applewood. The full spectrum! — 10 years ago
Trippy! Jolting acidity, nectarines, lemon juice, lasting thread of minerality. Full of nerve. — 10 years ago
Great white wine- just sweet & fruity enough; enjoyed at River Cafe — 12 years ago
Just balanced thread of Shiraz pepper and velvet consistency on the tongue. Will age very well, but very good now also. — 9 years ago
Damn interesting. Still hanging on, but maybe only by a thread at this point. — 9 years ago
An easy to drink dry Riesling with a smooth finish. Well balanced light citrus notes with a hint of kiwi and lychee. More on the sweeter side of dry Riesling, but not a sweet Riesling. Loved it. — 9 years ago
Pear-citrus on the nose. Lemon grass, mild acid, nice minerality @the beginning of the bottle. But - Wow this mellows with some time. Palmelo on the nose. Smooth pear with a little citrus, a little sweetness. Love this one! (Chicken curry w/ rice) — 10 years ago
