The Debate Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Take some awesome pedigree fruit, over oak the crap out of it and then add some oak chips and shavings for good measure. Round vanilla, dark berry and you guessed it, wood grain. Disappointing for the price point, no debate here. — 9 years ago

Reserve Chardonnay 2012

Jimmy Smith
9.3

2012: lovely fragrant nose, white flowers, mineral, quite ripe peach and a hint of tropical. Vanilla. Lovely balance of acidity, mineral, leesy texture, creamy but still lively. Lightly oaky on the finish, hint of buttered toast. A superb wine that beat Burgundy, California and South Africa on our Grape Debate evening on Chardonnay (sub £20 - but also beat others above £20) — 10 years ago

Viña Real (CVNE)

Reserva Rioja Tempranillo 1981

Intense coffee liqueur, dried fruits, mint. Luxurious, utterly delicious. Blind tasted, nobody thought if was Rioja, but there was a spirited debate about whether it was old Rhone or old claret. — 11 years ago

Meeker

Fossil Sonoma County Cabernet Blend 2010

Contributed by Heather For debate viewing dinner party. Nicely aged cab/merl/syr blend had a bit of smokiness at first; overall made for a very well balanced glass. Was determined that 2016 campaign calls for higher than 14.5% alc. — 9 years ago

Cervoles

La Pobla de Cérvoles Blanc Costers del Segre Lleida White Blend 2014

Quite oaky on the nose, some debate about unripe pineapple vs Meyer lemon, white pepper on the mid palate. Not over oaky on the palate. — 10 years ago

Bruna Grimaldi

Camilla Barolo Nebbiolo 2008

Good typicity. Dried cranberry, red currant, red plum, dried rose, violets, organic and inorganic earth, moderate level of VA, normal for the style. Bridge between modern and old style. Paired well with a debate concerning the carrying capacity of European vs African swallows, ascertaining the guilt of a witch, and a near-fatal battle with a bloodthirsty rabbit :) — 10 years ago

9.2

Irises and crunchy red fruit and iron and acid. Some debate about whether there was just a hint of Brett, which for me added additional interest, regardless of the source. Young yet, though doesn't seem destined for the long life this can support in the best vintages. Worth noting that this is the "N" version. — 10 years ago

Bodegas y Viñedos Vega Sicilia

Valbuena 5° Ribera del Duero Tempranillo Blend 1993

1993. Some debate about whether it was past it's best. For me, it was delicious. Power. Softness. Oxidised, but not too much. Oaky and rich. — 11 years ago

Antoine Luyt

Huasa de Pilen Alto País 2013

Controversial French winemaker Louis-Antoine Luyt delivers a #pais wine from 100+ year-old vines from Cauquenes in the Maule Valley. Funky and reduced after uncorked, a much-needed aeration (in a water jug, mind you) brought to life a juicy, tense and extremely refreshing wine. The liquid was totally opaque, bringing a new meaning to the words "unfiltered & unfined". I remember a couple of years ago having a heated debate with another Frenchman who was making a documentary about Luyt who told me how wines like this battle against the homogenisation of flavours. Not for everyone. You can find it with Louis/Dressner if in the USA. — 10 years ago

This is a great summary that I think pretty much applies to all Luyt's wines. Let's hope winemakers like him stem the tide of homogenization. But as you say, not for everyone.

Domaine de Terrebrune

Bandol Mourvedre Blend Rosé 2014

I'm not the biggest rosé fan. Too bad coz I live in rosé climate. This however was a delight. My friends parents insisted we drink it as its from Bandol an area of Provence known for their rosé. It was dry without the boredom and more structured with a bigger body and tannic without the tart on one hand or sweet on the other. It's a cosmopolitan rosé- enjoyed in NYC, holding its own with political debate or high fashion outfits — 10 years ago

Ballast Point Brewing Company

Big Eye IPA

Let me this clear as possible, Ballast Point Brewery is one of the Best breweries on the west coast, there is nothing they do that is not great to outstanding, this one is great, what over shadows it is "Sculpin" which is Outstanding, so this seems not as good, but please do not be so quick to judge, this one holds up to the style 100%, it is a excellent west coast IPA, big big Centennial hops, maybe some Columbus, seems there is some debate on that, no matter, it had a great Carmel back bone that balances the great hops, it is one beer that stands on its own, Great stuff — 11 years ago
