Mushrooms in mocha, brown rice, caramel-y citrus with Bing cherry, soy sauce, and beef ribbons tease the nose. Happy to see less candy and soda in a beer. Soy sauce, molasses, baker's chocolate, oak, cedar, and cinnamon with allspice. Great! The sour is at the end but buoys the whole. — 10 years ago
I dug deep in the cellar for a special wine with our chargrilled NY strip. I opened the deep garnet-colored '94 Joseph Phelps Red Bordeaux Blend 'Insignia'. Decanted and aerated for two hours, the aromas of cedar, cassis, mocha, forest floor and eucalyptus tingled the nose. Dark fruits and minerals in the velvety mouth with long-lasting impressions of sweet, ripe and polished tannins. Lots of class and pedigree in this beauty. A most memorable meal! — 12 years ago
Haven't had a Gonon in a while, figured I'd check in on '11. Good amount of black and blue fruit still, and an ample amount of that briney-umami-black olive flavor I love in here, and some mildly funky earth tones, that go really well with the rich earthy nuttiness of this 42 day aged NY strip (home aging by joeD). Think the last Gonon I recall opening was '13 after release last year, and it was brutally young. The '11 however is nicely settled down, smooth fine tannins, long finish, but plenty of room to mature yet. — 10 years ago
The 2008 vintage has aged beautifully and I submit that it is approaching its peak potential. The dark fruit flavor coupled with mature balance on the palate makes this offering well worth an excellent rating. Sir Rolland has championed this wine as possibly the premium wine of the Long Shadows brand. Paired nicely with the house NY Strip Steak...4 Cheers!!!! — 11 years ago
Thick... Seriously has legs. Dark and full bodied with a rich smokiness. Definitely a wine to go with a nice New York strip! — 11 years ago
Complemented the medium rare New York strip we had it with. Frankly it would have been equally delicious with any soft cheese and nuts. — 12 years ago
A little bit past it's prime but still has plenty fruit left. Very nice and easy drinking. Drank this bottle with a grilled NY strip steak. — 12 years ago
Another Food and Wine club selection. Tonight with NY Strip and loaded mashed potatoes. — 14 years ago
Really good with NY strip on grill. Good, representative CDP. — 10 years ago
Auction win! Bought for my brother for Christmas. Our birth year. What an amazing wine. Having tonight with him visiting with a nice New York strip. Still has a great nose of dark fruit, good grip, good acid and I have to say a tad of tannin left. What a rockstar wine. Getting better each hour too. — 10 years ago
Had with strip steak (salt, pepper, brown sugar then charcoal grilled Med Rare)--great pair. — 11 years ago
Paul Hobbs juice. Couldn't pass it up considering Hollis is the name of one of our daughters. Paired perfectly with a NY Strip — 11 years ago
