This one has improved with time. Well integrated and silky smooth. The dusty cherry fruit had a cinnamon, nutmeg, spicebox accent along with a savory earthiness. — 8 years ago

1806 Gigondas Red Rhone Blend 2013

This lovely Gigondas combines drinkability with depth and interest. Dark cherries and brambles, spicebox, garrigue and violets. 20% Syrah in this wine, and it's enough to keep me coming back for more. — 9 years ago

Dark fruits, spice, fruit tea and dry floral nose. Fruits are stewed. Black spiced plum, blackberries, black cherries, back palate of strawberries, dates, figs, spicebox, soft elegant minerals, dry floral bouquet, dry dark earth, anise, sweet leather, baking spices. An amazing complex blend with a ripe rich fruit finish. This is in a perfect place and a good example of why you want to cellar most of your Cabernet 10 + years. — 9 years ago

Subtler than the Sizeranne, this single vineyard from one of the most prized areas of Hermitage offers light blueberry fruit, spicebox, rolled cigar, cedar, sawdust, and good integration with its alcohol. Lovely. — 9 years ago

Kirschenmann Vineyard Zinfandel 2014

Rainy day wine while braising pork shoulder. Sensual and elegant expression of zin. Floral, spicebox, cracked black pepper, powdered sugar, raspberry jam, cooked cranberries, cherry compote, sweet wood. Juicy and rich fruits balanced by fresh acid and fine tannins. Perhaps making it up but I feel like there is a sand-like mineral taste/texture to the wine, like getting sand in your mouth at the beach but more delicious. Fantastic juice that is balanced and ethereal. Own-rooted, silica based sands, planted in 1915. — 9 years ago

Côtes du Forez Gamay 2013

I've had this a few times now. I love gamay. Americans don't quite appreciate gamay because of the acidity. It's made for food, period. This Forez is great. Cranberry, cherry, spicebox and herbs. It's fresh and it gets your palette ready for things like lamb, coq au cin, and wash-rind cheese. — 10 years ago

Great find. Full of blackberries, plums (the ones that are red inside), spicebox, palm tree leaves, with a slight touch of Rutherford valley dust at the end but mostly full dark purple/red mountain body. Silky smooth and recommend a try. Vineyards are farmed by Jon-Mark Chappellet and it shows. — 8 years ago

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2006

Quite woodsy upon opening. Some evolution in the translucent garnet core. Meaty nose, beefblood, stew, spicebox, gingerbread, dried cherry, but also prunes and dates. Soft and round on the palate. Again, that hint of evolution. Very leafy and floral, touch of alcoholic warmth in the back. There's good balance, but it's not an elegant wine. Fine. — 9 years ago

La Cerbaiola di Salvioni Giulio

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 1998

Deep black core, ruby mid section, starting to show some autumnal browning in the edges.
First sniff is a little murky, soupy. But this blows away after aeration and then a very quiet, sophisticated, graceful bouquet is revealed, hinting at cigars, black olive, sundried tomato, spicebox, fatty Ibericoham, black cherries and plumpudding. Terrific concentration on the palate! Silky soft and smooooth, cinnamon, milk chocolate, leather, discrete notes of oak and garden herbs all coalesce into the very long, echoing finish. Did I already mention this has sheer perfect acidity? An androgynous wine, masculine and feminine at the same time. A home run in this so-so vintage.

Château Ferrière

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 1995

This was a very satisfying bottle, perhaps even out of proportion to where it stands as a matter of raw "quality" or however you want to put it. It's a firmly old-style Bordeaux, with a profile of red orchard fruits, old wood and spicebox, and unapologetically astringent tannins that don't really relax until it gets a chance to warm up from cellar temperature. It is still young, probably a decade from its zone, but there is something about it that reaches really far back and reminds me of some of the antique early 20C Bordeaux I've had. It's not that it tastes advanced, but it's in the style, like a young man wearing a vintage wardrobe, and I can easily imagine it getting to a similar state one of these days. It's still got plenty of density and seve at the core so I see a firm constitution here. The chateau's reputation was in the doldrums in this period although this wine was reasonably well-reviewed. At this point it's an unqualified success. I paid $25 for this, this year! — 9 years ago

Black cherry fruit, with ample spicebox, toasty oak, forest floor and deep, dark espresso flavors taking over mid-palate. Lush and concentrated. The velvety finish is generous, and the tannins provide great structure. Young, this needs some cellar time. A 15-yr wine. — 9 years ago

Vieilles Vignes Madiran Tannat 2000

Damp earth, prunes and black cherries, antique cabinets, humidor, spicebox, dried herbs and a touch of manure. On the palate there is a luxury mouthfeel, horse stable, classic dryness, acidity and rusticity. Resolving tannines, completely a point. Somewhere halfway a Saint Estephe and a Cornas. Amazing QPR.

Even improves with air! Up a notch.

As you know wine closes down in the bottle. From there it goes through cycles of "good time to open" and "not a good time to open." May I suggest a plan B? Maybe, invest in a Coravin. I did and it's fantastic!!!
