Flora Springs

Trilogy Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1994

Before I get into the notes, Flora Springs “Trilogy” is one of those wines from my formative years in this wine journey. Subsequently, it holds a special place in my heart. You can probably imagine how excited I was to enjoy the 1994 a vintage I likely drank long ago, out of a double-magnum no less! Giddy.

Popped and poured from double-magnum into red Solo cups and enjoyed her the course of an hour. The 1994 “Trilogy” pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears and significant sediment. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of ripe and desiccated dark and red fruits: brambles, currants, plums, tobacco, old leather, dusty earth and gentle warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin (integrated) and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+ and the texture is silky. The large format has no doubt had an effect on this wine’s nearly evergreen properties but what a treat! Drink now regardless of format and enjoy this in its full maturity.

Columbia Valley Dry Rosé Blend 2023

Good fruit, strawberry, touch of lemon, peach and cream (?), good acid but not at all tart, honeydew, citric and malic notes on finish. Dry but not bone dry. Complex but missing savory and mineral notes from previous vintages, oh well, drinkable enough why wish for the moon? — 10 months ago

Birthday wine for my wife. This was my first bottle, absolutely amazing. Big ripe fruit with perfect acidity and tannins to match. Super structure. Black and blue fruit. Great mouthfeel, slightly dry. Nice finish. — 3 years ago

Seven Hills Vineyard Merlot 2014

It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back!

Ruby in color with a wide reddish rim.

Pretty nose and medium plus in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with nice complexity.

Showing cherries, currants, plums, dark chocolates, earth, tobacco leaf, herbs and peppercorn.

Long finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries.

This 11 year old Merlot still feels fresh and engaging, with a lot of power to last even longer.

This Single Vineyard Merlot is extracted and fruit forward. The alcohol is nicely integrated by now. Nicely balanced with a nice mouthfeel.

Delicious by itself as a sipping wine, and will pair nicely with food too.

14.7% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

$50.

Light gold color, a little nutty showing some age but with good acidity and minerality, it was showing very well but with ample life remaining. — 9 months ago

Wahluke Slope Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Looks like a nice Columbia Valley Cab. Dark color. Heady and dense nose. Maybe a herbal and earthy streak in with the plum sauce on the nose. Flavors are chewy and vicious. Horehound meets berry cobbler and a bit of flint. Plenty bittersweet like a good Cab should be. Has a big style, but holds a bit of elegance as well. Will be great with the grilled steak I’m going to have with it later. A nice find at the grocery outlet 20% off wine sale. — 9 months ago

Christmas Day wine 🎄🎅🏼🍷

Acquired this for two reasons: Flora Springs was my “a-ha” wine 10yrs ago which started my wine journey, and secondly because it’s my sister-in-law’s birth year.

Enjoyed on Christmas Day (with said sister-in-law) and family (the family who introduced me to wine + Flora Springs). Kept the bottle standing for a few days. In the glass, there was bricking but the color was much more vibrant than expected. Aromatically, it showed mushroom and fig, but a good bit of muddled red and black berry fruit, some mint as well. Alive, elegant and bright on the palate with good tannin structure (held strong the two hours it was open). Small hint of tobacco at the finish, but the berry fruit stayed persistent keeping the flavors balanced. Undeniably older Napa (13%) and in great shape.
