May 16, 2019 in Tucson w/ Karen. Her wine for “a special occasion”. The occasion was special because of this wine. Wow. Just an awesome Bolgheri. — 7 years ago
A really interesting wine. Even though I know these can be everything from black fruit dominated to more of an ash dominated type of wine, the notes here were a little bit tart and even a little on the sweeter side. Dates, sweet plums. Had a hint of tobacco, very ashy in the middle and finish. There is suggestion that this one may even be on its way down, and I definitely question that now. Left remaining 25%of bottle for 12 hours later and although the nose had markedly improved, the wine had not. This doesn't seem to be a good ager. — 7 years ago
The 1988 d'Yquem is almost identical to the bottle I tasted in 2016. This is almost Barsac-like in style on the nose with scents of barley sugar, complemented by marmalade and mandarin, fresh and vibrant with a palpable sense of energy. The palate is medium-bodied with a viscous texture but it is not, and has never been, as unctuous as either the 1989 or 1990. However, what the 1988 does possess is a surfeit of vitality and tension. There are layers of blood orange, quince and marmalade towards the finish that as the aromatics suggest, comes across as quite Barsac in style. Superb. Tasted at Château Batailley. Rich though lacked some oomph. May have been open awhile (by the glass) — 9 years ago
Wow. This is nearvana. It may get better but I doubt it, start drinking now, no rush. Fruit, earth, graphite, cigar box. Everything you need it to be. — 10 years ago

Wonderful Reisling and normally not even a fan — 11 years ago
Has too much presence in relation to the structure but authentic and authoritative aroma makes it compelling. The flavor could dig deeper into the core and bit more continuous but that may happen down the road. Conventional but true classic. — 7 years ago
Just had this in Bordeaux a few weeks ago. Like most wines of this vintage it took a bit of imagination to fully appreciate. It is clearly time to drink this wine, it may be on the downhill side of life. Overall a good experience for what was not noted as a premium vintage, but is a very solid wine. — 7 years ago
Crisp, clean, minerally. — 7 years ago
Very nice wine ! — 10 years ago
A German resiling - do they ever not impress? The Rudolf Trossen Schieferblume Riesling is a pale yellow green colour. The nose is crisp with sharp lime and lemon but also aromatic with hints of lavender once at at room temperature. White fleshed peach on the palate - sweeter than I'd been told. Delightful! — 10 years ago
I've had many vintages of Calon-Segur; this may be the oldest. The cork was perfect even with nearly 20 years of bottle aging. It took about an hour for the glass to open. Typical of Grand Cru Bordeaux, the bouquet was pleasant and graceful. A great value for under $130. Cheers!! — 11 years ago
Great left bank Bordeaux blend from South Africa. Dark fruits, pencil lead...Cabernet Sauvignon taste....actually this is all Cab Sav. Made by a Bordeaux lady who moved to South Africa — 7 years ago
Very Burgundy in style with strawberries & cream + a touch of herbs. Nice mouthfeel with polished tannins and red fruit, juicy acidity. Very nice balance with a lingering finish. This is much bette than expected, Pommard Village quality for a fraction of the price. — 7 years ago
It Was the battle of the 1999’s tonight!
I believe this came in second place. Very light and somewhat Bordeauish in style.
The tannins are gone, the dark opulent fruit is gone, I’m getting forest floor, Dark cherry, Graphite and a medium to long finish. I think I may prefer it to drinking young!

A remarkable wine, a bit like many ‘45’s in its power and concentration. And while those who are after some more of the La Chapelle structure may be disappointed (and I have sympathy with aspects of the assessment), this is such an full expression of fruit and terroir, that I can really only cheer. Plums, orange zest, pepper and currants on the enticing nose. The palate is awash in luscious, sweet fruit, soy tinged, with melting tannins, round and soft, pure velvet past the mid palate, and it finishes with gusto, batons twirling, with layered exuberance and appealing length. — 10 years ago
What a nose. Deep berry fruit and very bright. Great whip of acidity. Transparent as fuck. — 11 years ago
My 4th bottle, the best and my last, this absolutely killed it and is why I love Napa Valley Cabernet, especially #Spottswoode. 12 years old this easily has another 10 to go but is in a beautiful place right now. Open or decant for 30 minutes, though I did not decant. A deep resold color, not a sign of brick as one would expect. Shows the importance of provenance (bought from winery). A complex set or aromas and flavors of creme d'cassis, currants, sweet and sour cherries, sweet cedar, and graphite. Palate wise the textures are all in alignment, with medium to full body, ample acidity and medium grain slightly chewy tannins that may be it's only flaw. #2002 — 11 years ago

2014. Just really good. May have aged a little longer, but definitely drinkable right now. — 6 years ago
