The other night I opened the 2021 Barboursville Vineyards Virginia Reserve Cabernet Franc. From Barboursville, Virginia a blend of 90% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot.
On the nose there is strawberry, raspberry, herbs, green bell pepper, violet, graphite and crushed gravel.
On the palate is strawberry, raspberry, red plum, pepper, herbs, green bell pepper and crushed gravel.
This is a medium bodied wine with a smooth mouthfeel medium to medium + acidity and medium to medium + integrated silky tannins that provides a long red fruit herbaceous finish. We are starting a new weekend and so let us have a wonderful one. Try and have fun relaxing with your loved ones. Stay healthy and safe. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷 — 2 years ago
Gift of Roger and Joann Christmas 2020 — 2017 on 10/16/2021. Purple. Blackberry wet bark violets. Surprisingly thin but still fruity and lasting on pallet. — 4 years ago
Really solid - clean representation of PV, but almost to simple. Perhaps indicative of the standard vintage. Balance is key to its score - flavor notes are a little dusty/dry due to lower brix at picking. Don’t get me wrong, a real steady varietal winner from this region :) — 4 years ago
One of best Chard ever had - buttery and refreshing. Very floral and great with hard white cheeses — 5 years ago
Crazy love... amazing flavors and finish. — 7 years ago
10/10/24 ALX Best of Virginia wine class. 100% Petit Manseng. Loved this one! Extremely tart and citrusy, light and refreshing. One of my (and Erin the wine guru!) favorite VA wines! — 9 months ago

N: lots of Black fruit (black cherry, plum) with a bit of red, violets, a bit of sweet tobacco, and light vanilla.
P: nice texture on the palate without being overly heavy, cassis, Dried herbs, mixed ground pepper, dusting of chocolate.
Off the hook with a mushroom burger. — 4 years ago
So not much has changed in 3 yrs since first trying this in the tasting room. The profile is lean and linear. 69 CS 16 Merlot and the rest PV. This clearly the weakest build of Jeff’s run of left bank builds. The 2014 was classic, so not huge numbers for the CS. THE TEXTURE IS LOVELY though. ;) 90+ for sure, keeping the streak ALIVE!! — 4 years ago
Red raspberry, dark chocolate, cognac, black plum. Elegant texture, tannins smoothed, hint of spice on the finish. — 5 years ago
Another consistently delicious year. Crisp and clean with hint of mineral. Perfect wine to compliment fish and the salinity of the local oysters. — 5 years ago
So, This is a really difficult great to harness in the seller… The sugar can skyrocket and cause the alcohol to get out of control through fermentation… I think Jim did a decent job here harnessing the energy without making it a sugar bomb. Rich apricot and mango are framed by a sturdy acidic border. A really pretty wine although I mis-paired it w/ chicken tikka masala. The acid was a little too strong for the sauce without the presence of RS. All in all, it is a wonderfully Rich wine that needs the right dance partner — 7 years ago
Yes, phenomenal Elegance the harmony of acid /structure / mouthfeel / finish :: 8yrs old! Virginia rocks Chardonnay at a world-class level. — 9 months ago
One of finest vintage yrs for this estate, as evidenced by the OPULENTLY RICH PV component. Jeffersons terroir and taste of place are evident in this bottle… Think somewhere in between Paso Robles Cab and Rhône GSM. - very unique finish. Delish and a real value! $28 at Wegs — 3 years ago
Deep gold with an enticing bouquet of green and golden apples, apricot, and subtle notes of grilled pineapple, oaky notes of cedar and charred brûlée, and some bottle age with hints of petrol and grilled meat fat drippings. Mouthfeel is rich and viscous with a palate of more green fruit of green and golden apples, notes of apricot, and hints of vanilla oakiness with a nicely lingering medium length finish. Drank it with Thanksgiving dinner; didn't eat the turkey but it went well with all the sides; even did fine with dessert. I'm confident it would pair well with the meat, too. — 4 years ago
Really enjoyed the balance of fruit and oak - good for a cooler day when you still want a white. Not ideal summer drinking wine — 4 years ago
Time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Here is a tasty one from Virginia.
Dark ruby in color with a nice reddish rim.
Fruity nose with blueberries, currants, bing cherries, honeysuckle, light oak, red candy, spices, dark coffee, vanilla, dark chocolates, light vegetables and black pepper.
Medium plus in body with medium plus acidity and pretty legs.
Dry on the palate with cherries, sweet strawberries, black currants, light wood, spices, black pepper, earth, bitter herbs and tobacco leaf.
Medium plus in finish with soft tannins and tangy raspberries.
This is a very interesting wine from Virginia. A nice Bordeaux blend that warrants food, although pretty nice by itself too. Tangy and soft, with a nice mouthfeel and mild complexity.
Needs 30 minutes to open up properly, but so much nicer after 90 minutes in a decanter, when it really comes together.
Could be mistaken for a California Bordeaux blend, except for the honeysuckle nose, that i usually find in wines from the Southeast of the US.
Nice and engaging with lively acidity and a tangy finish.
Would be nice to see how it ages in the next 5 years.
I enjoyed it with Brie cheese.
A blend of 41% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Franc, 23% petit verdot, and 4% Malbec.
13.6% alcohol by volume.
90 points.

2012 tasted in 12/2018. Deep garnet, medium to full bodied. Wonderful perfume of black cherries, floral notes, and wet stone. Opens up substantially in the glass. Decanting will coax out an enchanting bouquet. Palate characterized by not overly ripe red to black fruit character with great acid structure, tannins still young at this time. A well crafted wine such as this can handle some time in the cellar. An ABV of 14.5% would suggest a bolder, riper red but the depth, complexity, and balance of this wine is unrivaled among East Coast reds with the notable exception of similar blends from Linden. Very lovely with an old world style. — 7 years ago
