Riley Harrison

Mount Riley

Marlborough Pinot Noir 2014

Fragrant, with black cherry, ripe pomegranate and cranberry sauce demanding recognition. A generous touch of dark roses and dried lavender fall to tobacco leaf, gun smoke, and clove. Zippy and even on the verge of austere. Chewy and muscular tannins provide support for an expressive, spicy, and puckering finish. A slight hint of addictive creaminess makes its presence on the nose and palate. Mainly, this is "new" old world style; the fruit has been elevated. Delicious right now. However, this could use some time to develop. Great effort here. — 9 years ago

A little harder because it was with food (paired great with the grilled chicken, Cesar salad, and artichoke) and chocolate (another good pairing). Oaky on the nose and palate, but in a good way. Cherry. — 10 years ago

Wm. Harrison Vineyards & Winery (William Harrison)

Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Needs 3 years in bottle. Double decanted and was a nice dusty blackberry front, a little darker and floral in the middle. Finish is also quite floral, still rather acidic and lots of stiff oak tannin. Dusty and shale stone rich finish. Enjoyable classic Rutherford cab that doesn't try to be something it isn't. GREAT family owned boutique winery off the Silverado Trail. — 9 years ago

This had a eucalyptus thing going on that I alternated between liking and disliking, but this has otherwise aged pretty well, much better than other Delilles from the era I have tried. — 10 years ago

Antica Terra

Ceras Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2011

Fantastic pinot from Maggie Harrison at Antica Terra in Oregon. Bright cherries on the nose and subtle, earthy notes on the palate. Incredible balance. Can be drunk now or laid down for several years. Awesome effort from one of the best wineries in the Willamette Valley. — 11 years ago

Domaine Tempier

Bandol Mourvedre Blend 2013

I had this in honor of one of my favorite writers, Jim Harrison, who passed a few weeks back. He loved this wine and I haven't had it enough to love it. However, this time was a real eye-opener. Super funky nose upon opening, like leather and barnyard. But it opened up, and the first sip had a lot more black fruits with just that underlying funk. Turned out two hours in a decanter did this wine some justice. Complex and enjoyable, stood up to a porterhouse, enough fruit to make it immediately satisfying but with so much more going on. Tannins relatively light. — 10 years ago

Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2007

Interesting mature Sauvignon. Deep straw yellow. Grapefruit and citrus, some nutty notes. Dry and a touch earthy. Great length. Wish it wasn't the last one! — 12 years ago
