Tenuta di Fessina

A' Puddara Etna Bianco Carricante 2013

On the Lawn at Tanglewood this afternoon with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Our conductor Andris Nelsons is leading GERSHWIN (Piano Concerto in F), GERSHWIN (Variations on “I Got Rhythm,” for piano and orchestra) and STRAVINSKY (Petrushka) with the amazing Jean-Yves Thibaude as the piano soloist on the two first works presented today. Jean-Yves is by far among our favorite pianists to grace the Koussevitzky Shed stage, so graceful, yet poignant!

Hot days call for cool wines, today there are some fun ones planned for sharing.

Similar notes from our last bottle.
Savory herbs, beeswax, citrus pith. So wonderful!

Spottswoode

Family Estate Grown St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Delectable Wine
9.6

The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon possesses off the charts ripeness as well as a level of exoticism that recalls the 2010. An infusion of dark red cherry, plum, white flowers, leather, tobacco and menthol accompany this super-expressive, sumptuous Cabernet Sauvignon. Violet, licorice and a host of spiced nuances develop with time in the glass. In 2015, Spottswoode's Cabernet is decidedly luscious and flamboyant, but I would give it a few years to shed some baby fat. There is plenty to look forward to. The Ojai Vineyard

Roll Ranch Vineyard Syrah 2003

Fun bottle that has shed its baby fat, moving towards a more focused, savory stage of its life. I bet the fruit on this was just gorgeous and deep 8-10 years in. Plenty of acid and the maturity of the tannin brought life to the wine. Abv is a bit intrusive on the nose, but that nice richness it brings on the palate offers a compromise. Stewed blackberry, plum and cherry notes, smoke, and iron edge, potpourri, warm spice, leather. I curious were it’s going and where’s its been. — 7 years ago

Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

Baron de Pichon-Longueville Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

Consistent with my prior bottles. Nice aroma of black fruits, graphite, and some trace of vanilla. Medium bodied with tannin to shed. Silk and fine. Long finish. — 8 years ago

Domaine Auguste Clape

Cornas Syrah

Great vintage for Clape showing black & red fruits, kirsch, smoked meats, blood & iron, very floral with licorice spices and black pepper. Needs another few years to shed some of its tannin structure but a wow wine in the making! — 8 years ago

@Severn Goodwin where are you located? I know in general it’s hard to good SA wine in the states. Here are some options if you can find them: Kanonkop Pinotage (regular or black label not kadette), Beyerskloof Diesel (on my hit list, supposed to be amazing), Beeslaar (found it more elegant but the winemaker that made Kanonkop famous), and Rijk’s (if you can find it - good one for when you visit @David T and do Tokara’s new one). Some others that you might be able to find are Ashbourne (from Hamilton Russell), B Vintners Liberté (from Raats known for CF) and was impressed by the Wildekrans but have only had their wines once before. Hope this helps guys

Koehler-Ruprecht

Kallstadter Saumagen Spätlese Trocken Riesling 2009

Came out of the gates backward, attacking dry and departing “sweet” almost. Once upright the gorgeous honey kissed citrus/stonefruit, exotic flowers, and array spices and herbs, ginger, tea, aloe. While it’s shed some baby weight, it still has a great interplay of powerful concentration and extract to keep the acid in check. — 7 years ago

Clos Saint Jean

La Combe des Fous Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2010

This is effing delicious. Day 1: Heady on the nose, layers of raspberry/strawberry confiture, mulberry, sous bois, lavender, roasted fig, sweet spices, potpourri and rocks. Palate is so dense, layer upon layer of berries, garrigue, spices, mocha, licorice, black minerals, and crushed flowers. Like drinking velvet, opulent and sexy, crazy long finish. Day 2: the textural richness of this wines grew with air. Even more richness and posh on the palate. Nose unraveled, aromas of animal, leather, savory earth, sarsaparilla, and rich umami accents popped up. On the palate the wine shed some of its alcoholic edge and began to express those rich notes of coffee, cocoa, leather, and the deep layers of fruit grew. A purely hedonistic experience for S. Rhône drinkers. — 8 years ago

Hay Shed Hill Wines

Block 2 Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Dense crimson. Slightly jammy nose. Black fruits. Medium-heavy cab of medium length. Lacks the finesse of cheribino/ xanadu et al. Fruit ladden front and mid palate. Dense tannic finish. Balanced enough and may be better in a few years but too jammy and not well enough integrated currently. D3 update: beautiful, seemless, jaminess gone. 94 (from 92-93) — 8 years ago

Lots of fun bottles were popped at Al’s hosting this past weekend for his birthday celebration. All were served blind. 1 sparkler, 2 whites, 6 reds and 1 dessert wine.

Out of all the wines from the night, this one changed the most. At first, it was very reminiscent of South African blends with a smoky rubbery like note. Odd. After about two hours, it shed that and was showing a lot of sweet cassis, baking spices, ripe red and black fruits. Balanced and smooth on the palate with graham cracker, dates, dark cocoa and mixed berries. I called this Napa cab but couldn’t pin point a producer. Props to Weston for calling this Shafer HSS!

Hundred Acre Vineyard

Kayli Morgan Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2000

Shed its baby fat. At its best today...won’t get any better moving forward. No milk chocolate, faint cherry filled dark chocolate nose. Little bit of cherries jubileee and cedar. While really smooth, I think these are best with 8-10yrs on them as opposed to 18 like this one. However, for what this is and how it aged, it’s pretty impressive. Also, look at the ABV here...shocking to see on a Hundred Acre wine! — 7 years ago

Flat Rock Cellars

The Rusty Shed Twenty Mile Bench VQA Chardonnay 2006

The 2006 Rusty Shed Chardonnay is a blend of four blocks of Chardonnay on the Flat Rock Property. Grapes are hand picked and hand sorted before whole bunch pressing takes place. It was then cold settled in stainless steel, 100% barrel fermented and left on the lees for 10 months. Wild and commercial yeasts were used for primary fermentation, followed by malolactic fermentation to soften the natural acidity. The result?
Beautiful example of a mid to full bodied Chardonnay with butter, vanilla, apples and light spice on the palate. A lot of flavour and elegance at this price point. Sampled this 2006 in 2017 but this should sit well and perhaps develop more for a few more years. Best part? It's from Niagara! Loved it!
