Tenuta dell'Ornellaia

Bolgheri Red Bordeaux Blend 2006

WOTN Xmas 2016 with the 2006 vintage. Perfect pairing for prime rib. Great fruit, balance, excellent example of an Italian Bolgheri blend. Drinking well now but will clearly last for a while. — 9 years ago

Château Gruaud Larose

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1994

9.4

Ideal maturity! Like Pontet-Canet and Leoville-Barton, Gruaud made a better 1994 than the more famous 1995 & 1996. This isn't just good for an off year- with prime rib it is great cassis loaded, medium bodied, vibrant claret. — 10 years ago

Far Niente Winery

Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

Decanted, it was outstanding all evening...not early or late, in its prime! — 10 years ago

Chateau Montelena

The Montelena Estate Calistoga Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

This was there 2004 cab, it needs to breathe for at least 60 minutes, and could possibly be past it's prime. I would definitely recommend drinking this year before the end of 2015. — 11 years ago

Château Léoville-Las Cases

Grand Vin de Leoville du Marquis de las Cases Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1978

Joseph Phelps Vineyards

Insignia Estate Grown Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2001

Xmas prime rib dinner. Started with the 01 Insignia. Excellent example of Napa fruit. Dark berries, anise, softened tannins with the age, a big wine. — 9 years ago

Chateau Montelena

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

2 days open and still prime. Jammy cab with lots to offer: a little fruit on the nose, a little spice on the finish. Always a winner. — 10 years ago

Dunn Vineyards

Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 1994

Decanted for 3 hours, opened up nicely and paired perfectly with the prime rib. — 10 years ago

Caymus Vineyards

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1988

Another wine courtesy of my Dad as a birthday gift when I was a child. It's not far from going over the hill, but it was hanging on. Dried strawberry and dried cherry, subtle leather, acidity was almost too high, but not unpleasant. Overall enjoyable but I certainly did not enjoy it in its prime, unfortunately. — 11 years ago

Opus One

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2000

Past its prime ? Could be. Otherwise a smooth and well rounded blend, a bit on the dry side, notes of earth and dark ripe berries. Was paired very well with a prime aged steak and truffles. — 13 years ago

Clos des Papes

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend

Heitz Cellar

Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 1967

Paul Costigan
9.2

1967: Lively spicy nose. Redolent with eucalyptus, as should be anticipated and celebrated. Metallic component, yet solid throughout of vibrant fruit. While a mere shadow of the other worldly 1968, still a prime example of the birth of modern California winemaking. An honor to experience. — 11 years ago

That's interesting, I didn't have anything to reference prior, since the wine was brought to dinner by someone else. I have often heard that the stated lower alcohol levels from that period were often low balled for tax advantage. I will say that the 1968 Martha's Vineyard is among the best structured wines I've experienced, from anywhere. This wasn't that, but it was a pleasant surprise that inspired a reflection upon a period of winemaking boldness that raised the bar. What's your favorite wine from that period that remains mind blowing?

Those wines from 66-78 amazing. Probably 1969 souverain and 74 RRV. Mondavi 69 really pretty.
