Perfect Set Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir 2015

Simple and straight forward Sta. Rita Hills. This was a interesting vintage, early harvest and small yields. Giving nice fruits but very light palate texture and finish. — 6 years ago

Santa Barbara County Syrah

We Coravin-ed this a while back, and I wish I would’ve checked in on the first glass. Oddly enough, it tastes lightly oxidized. …Notes of black cherry pie, raspberry jam, silky blueberry, and a cocoa finish. Dark red fruit throughout. Subtle black currant. A light herbaceousness I can’t quite place. Maybe oregano? Not as teeth-ripping as Orin Swift or Michael David Syrah, but easy to drink and good to pair. — 4 years ago

👍. Gotta try that technique again. First time I did it I thought the meat was really mealy. Could have been a bum steak.

I bought the Dry Aged by mistake, not my favorite type of steak & wouldn’t buy it again, at least on purpose.

With you on that. I made the bone in roast for Christmas. A little too funky.

Niagara Peninsula Merlot 2018

I had the Vin Nature version of this wine, 2018 Twenty Mile Bench.
Quite frankly exceptional, no additives, natural ferment and neutral barrels, unfiltered and unfined. Just a perfect expression of this varietal.

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

Maybe it’s silly to post a second wine from ducru, but... this is pretty darn good. Beautiful nose, complex flavors of blackberry, anise and oak from start to finish. The real thing must be AMAZING. 2005 rocks — 5 years ago

The Fifty Niagara Peninsula Chardonnay 2016

A nice Niagara Chardonnay. Quite full, but not overly rich if that makes sense. You get a bit of sensation from the barrel fermentation but there is no apparent oak, just body. Good acid but one smidge less cohesive on the finish than I’d like. Still nice. — 6 years ago

All fruit. Enough acidity to carry it through another decade. Please don’t wait though.

As Mike said, we both agree this is the best 1988 Bordeaux we’ve ever had. With that being my birth year, I’ve been fortunate to try quite a few. To my surprise, the wine gets a 9.5 in profile (seriously impressive), but it also gets a perfect 10 for the company it was enjoyed with and because Mike knew this was a special bottle for me. What a generous and thoughtful gesture.

Compared to the 1988 Lafite I had a few years ago (green and lean), this was a total knockout! Mouton being on the slightly bigger side of the spectrum, I think the ‘88 vintage benefited their style. Fruit is so vibrant. Deep red in the glass. Soft red berries, black cherries, mix of old red and black currant. Very floral…violets, roses, potpourri. Sweet herbs and leather. Nimble. What an experience, and one I hope to experience again! You have my deepest gratitude,
@Mike R !

Also, how fun was it to compare this versus the 1986
@Shawn R brought! That bottle was an absolute smoke show, and totally in the zone! Main difference between the 1986 and the 1988 was a deeper, more rich profile with the 1986, as expected. But I still can’t get over how good that 1988 was!

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1982

This is a tough one to rate. A 1982 and it drinks beautifully. Not on the decline at all, but happy I opened it for a nice post Xmas meal. The dark berries, leather and tobacco flavors blended and mellowed into a nicely rounded balanced flavor burst that comes out after an hour plus in the decanter. A truly great wine. — 4 years ago
