Linne Calodo

Sticks and Stones Paso Robles Grenache Blend 2005

Purchased on release, direct. Has been on my short list to open for awhile, but hadn't found the right occasion. Finally decided opening it IS the occasion, so Monday seemed good enough.

Perfectly showing its age, with a distinct aroma that on the surface is a beautiful chord of petrichor. With some further coaxing and some concentration the underlying elements begin to show. Smoldering forest floor leads the way to kirsch, asphalt, garrigue, and herbes de Provence. This really shows off Trevisan's talent to make balanced wines, which is especially noteworthy considering his neighborhood. His restraint paid dividends with this beauty. So happy I waited for this one.

Gallica

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Decanted 2.5 hours. Intriguing nose of warm black licorice and petrichor. Sweet and floral on entry and warm spice cake on the finish. The confectionary floral notes with eucalyptus increased over time. Rosemary makes wonderful wines but for my palate this needs more time in the bottle. Much less evolved than the '07. — 10 years ago

Saumur-Champigny Cabernet Franc

2015. Ripe and juicy berries, petrichor, sap, such a gorgeous and drinkable expression of Cabernet Franc. Clean but in no way simple. Perhaps the longest finish of any $25 wine I've ever consumed. — 8 years ago

Muted nose, yet shows honeydew, fresh rains, (petrichor), and ripe banana. Palate opens up, and is expressive. Tart and rich, despite the complete lack of oak. 100% Carneros, from Sangiacomo, and Ricci. Pure expression of fruit. Yum! — 9 years ago

Domaine Hippolyte Reverdy

Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc 2013

This fresh, crisp, and nervy Sancerre has never disappointed me. It's my go-to for sauvignon blanc and a great benchmark for the region.

As usual, the label declares a wide scale for alcohol percentage (11-14), but 2013 would seem to be at the lower end highlighting the elegance of this wine. Nose is powerful, vibrant, and assertive with layers of citrus (lime, grapefruit, under-ripe orange, etc...it's all there), grass, custard, creme brulee, and a bit of the ever mysterious petrichor-wet stone aroma that hallmarks the appellation. I'd have been happy to bury my nose in the glass, fully content to simply sniff without ever taking a sip. I would have rated the higher if only the mid-palate complexity was in sync with the nose. While it finishes long, the depth and nuance of the aromatics was not matched once sipped with the acidity displaying a few hard angles...perhaps due to its youth. Can't wait fot for time to round it out and bring it all together.
