Pauillac De Croizet Bages

Château Rauzan-Gassies

L'Orme Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2019

2019 vintage. From 30 hectares in Haut-Medoc, owned by the Quié family ( also Rauzan-Gassies and Croizet-Bages). A fine effort, showing that the Quié family is finally serious about quality, after decades of mediocrity. Much more evolved in colour compared to the 2019 Moulin de La Lagune tasted alongside. Ripe, slightly jammy fruit. Serve slightly cold to keep the high alcohol ( 15% abv.) in check. — 2 years ago

Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2018

Delectable Wine
9.5

The 2018 Grand Puy Lacoste has a quintessential Pauillac nose of intense black fruit infused with graphite scents, pencil shavings and a very discreet marine influence. It is beautifully defined, less opulent than the 2018 Lynch Bages tasted alongside, yet maybe more complex. The palate is medium-bodied and taut, offering sappy black fruit, gritty tannins and a lot of crushed stone. The focused, graphite-driven finish could only come from this appellation. Superb. A wine to correct those bemoaning that Bordeaux no longer makes "proper Claret." (Neal Martin, Vinous, March 2021)

Tapanappa

Piccadilly Valley Chardonnay 2013

See previous notes 30 weeks ago. Very similar. Mid Lemon in colour. Citrus on the nose with grapefruit predominant. The palate is overall a little more lean than I would like - a little austere for a 7 year old Chardonnay - perhaps the grapes were picked a little too early? Still lively with that acid but could do with a little more mid palate fruit. Made by Brian Croser who used to be at Petaluma some years ago before he started Tapanappa in 2002 in conjunction with Bollinger and the Cazes Family of Lynch Bages in Pauillac. Brian was Decanters Man of the Year in 2004. — 5 years ago

Château Haut-Bages Libéral

le Haut-Medoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2010

Le Haut - Medoc de Haut Bages Liberal is the third label of the well known 5th growth Pauillac, Château Haut-Bages Liberal. This is a great example of a Bordeaux sub $25 that drinks well in its price range. Notes of black fruits, dried tocacco, and cedar pour out of the bowl of the glass. On the pallet is a wonderful orchestration of black currant, graphite, minerals, fine tannin integration, and oak aging. This is a great expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, most likely due to a fantastic, once in a century growing year that produced top notch fruit. I tasted this at a young age, but I think this wine, due to its good acidity and structure, could age for several more years and maintain its youth.
I paired this with a New York Strip, sautéed kale and garlic, and cilantro lime rice; a successful pairing indeed!

Domaine L'Ostal Cazes

La Livinière Minervois Red Blend 2016

2016 vintage. Jean-Michel Cazes (owner of famous Pauillac Cru Classé Lynch-Bages and more recently Haut-Batailley) bought this Minervois estate in 2002. This is the "grand vin", a blend of 70% Syrah, 15% Carignan, 20% Grenache and 5% Mourvèdre. A very spicy concentrated wine that is more about power than finesse. The colour is still deep dark red with hardly any sign of evolution. Intense spicy nose. Bold and powerful with black fruit hidden in spices. Long peppery finish. Take no prisoners. Abv. 14,5%. — 3 years ago

Château Pontet-Canet

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2003

What a contrast to the 89 lynch bages. This wine was a deep purple. It is a dense full bodied wine with a very smooth finish. Little blueberry, graphite, and creme de cassis. Great wine. — 7 years ago

Château Latour

Le Pauillac de Chateau Latour Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

J. Kim
9.1

The 2016 has rounder fatter fruit and less angular architecture than the 2010, and more intense structure than the 2015. The aroma is a classic old school Pauillac, black fruit, tobacco, cigar box and graphite, on top of leathery barnyard bass notes that one often finds in old Lynch Bages or Pontet Canet. More masculine than feminine with lack of vanilla and minty notes. No overripeness, over-oakiness, over-manipulation this year. Type IV Bordeaux in which the aromatic complexity and the structural intensity is well-matched. Less polish this year but the balance between the presence and the reserve is so well-judged. — 3 years ago

Domaine De L'Ostal Estibals Minervois Syrah Blend 2016

2016 vintage. Domaine de l'Ostal is owned by famous Bordeaux winemaker Jean-Michel Cazes (Pauillac Cru Classé Château Lynch-Bages and more recently Haut-Batailley). We can reasonably expect him to not put his name on a bad wine, and this Estobal (the second wine of the estate, the top wine being labeled Domaine de l'Ostal Grand Vin) surely delivers. Dark red. Intense perfume of blackberry jam, rosemary and dried flowers. Mouthfilling layered jammy fruit, with good acidity, smooth tannin and good spicy length. — 5 years ago

A. de Luze & Fils

Château Lynch Bages Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend

We laid down this wine almost two decades ago in our home cellar, as the vintage year of 1996 was our daughter’s birth year. Now she’s 21 and the whole family was eager to sample what it had become. We went to the Brazilian churrascaria Fogo de Chao to make sure there would be plenty of different types of meat to pair with this well aged red. In a word—great. Silky and perfumed, earthy and complex, textbook aged Bordeaux. I couldn’t stop drinking it but made sure my wife and daughter got their share too! I’m excited that we still have five bottles left. — 8 years ago

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1993

The 1993 Pichon LaLande is great right now. Younger daughter's birthyear wine, drank with '89 Lynch Bages at Christmas dinner. More fruit than spice/tar in nose. Good acidity with softer tannins in the finish. Nice cherry fruit on the palate. Fruit lingered well in the finish. Drink up over next couple years. — 9 years ago
