It’s hard to focus on this when there’s that. Despite my SQN gawking, this was a real surprise. I had previously tasted the 2011 vintage shortly after it made Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list in 2013, but my recollection of it was that of a simple, juicy, fruit forward style that was notable for its balance and refreshing style. This vintage is a completely different animal. The sultry savory smokiness does its best to disguise its pure red cherry fruit, but it’s a purity and a concentration that can’t be held down. Not only does this have length, the cumbrous confluence of flavors are somehow precision tailored to a seamless finish, the end of which is difficult to pinpoint. — 8 years ago

I have never had such a delicious dry wine! Made in the Vouvray region of France, it is notable for being an atypical wine of the region. It was made because the the season was too cold. Deep in color and fragrant on the nose, this dark ruby red from Sicily offers a powerful set of aromas: cassis, black olives, cigar box, leather, anise and smoke all come around fairly quickly. This is one of those wines I run across from time to time that smells so good I almost forget to drink it. Almost. The palate is dark and savory. Blackberry and black plum are the most notable fruit flavors, but the Morgante is all about the trimmings. There is a muddy forest floor component and, if you are new to wine, rest assured that it’s a good thing. Minerality comes in abundance and there is a hint of sage there, too, with notes of tea, coffee and root beer finding their way through. — 10 years ago
