A whole bunch of young-vine grapes (7, to be exact) fermented separately in stainless steel, then allowed to make love together over the mild Catalan winter. A dense glass-staining purple, the '06 Charles Smith Syrah 'Royal City' is a monumental wine. Big, pungent aromas of game, truffles, black olives and dried fruits exploded from the glass. Complex, but still seamlessly balanced. The tastes stayed on the palate for a seemingly infinite length of time. Simply wonderful! — 12 years ago

The Syrah in the blend adds some earthy, gamey, leather and spice notes to the aroma, an expression very reminiscent of the St. Joseph wines of northern Rhone. Medium to heavy body mouth feel and packed with dark cherry flavors and even some notes of haricot vert and mint. Medium long finish with the tannins balancing well with the coffee and red fruit after taste. A very polished style. — 9 years ago

My last 2011 bottle. The estate of Sette Ponti lies in the heart of the Chianti zone, 15 miles northwest of the city of Arezzo, past the village of San Giustino Valdarno. Crognolo, aged in French Allier barriques, deep red with red fruit aromas and sweet perfumed spice. On the palate raspberry and cherry flavors, gentle spice and soft tannins with great mouthfeel. Good balance, lingering finish ending with some oak and mineral tones. Aged well. — 8 years ago

This comes from a site planted en fou, biodynamicaly cultivated and made sans soufre. Yes indeed- it has hit all of the current trends and might predict a future one... and it is still good. I love it when a good bottle challenges my prejudices! A little bit of smoke and a whole lot of stone fruit make this quite tasty. — 9 years ago

GW tasting 9/28/16. Nose that's classic Bordeaux woodiness and earthiness. Hints of that peppery now and minerals. Carries through to palate. Like a younger Sociando Mallet. Long good finish. Interesting profile. Indeed still lively. Harvest by hand destem and fermentation in concrete vat starting straight away. Since 70. Cap forms quickly. Insert 2 cm of fresh stem right under vat like a screen to prevent cap boiling over. This apparently reduces tannins to be very fine and not obvious. So no oxygen contact during this. No pump over or punch down. All natural. No sulfur during this. 1 year in large fuder (100 years old!). Then 2 years in old barrels (never cleaned!). No new oak. — 10 years ago
