Schäfer-Fröhlich

Blanc de Noir Trocken Spätburgunder 2015

Great, focused Spätburgunder rosé from the Nahe. Another solid effort from Schäfer-Frölich. Appears there's barely any skin contact; pours a very pale, bright, almost silver-y copper color. Lean 'n' mean. A bit reductive at first; splash it into a decanter a bit before serving and it'll help it blow off though. On the nose, a pile of wet, crushed stone, cranberries, slightly underripe watermelon, a slight herbaceousness and a bit of lager-y lees character. The palate is pretty congruent in term of flavor to the aromatic character, with bright, high acid and just a touch of RS to help round it off and add a little extra oomph to the fruit character. Light, lean body. Incredibly food-friendly wine. Nice companion in this 95 degree heat. — 8 years ago

Unplugged Kabinett Trocken Riesling 2013

The bright golden color of this Riesling is very intense such as the nose that offers a clean fragrant bouquet. The first smell goes on greedy ripe fruit and hints of fresh butter quickly balanced by floral aromas. The first sensation of the palate is lively and reveals a sharp freshness on delicate green apple and lime. Then it soften to give flavorsome white peach aromas. Very well balanced the finish is smooth and refreshing. For those who like to have a evolving palate, this wine will not let you down. — 7 years ago

Monzinger Halenberg Trocken Riesling 2013

2013 vintage. Pale golden hue. On the nose, medium plus concentration of bread dough, Apple sauce, chalky minerality, lime zest and grapefruit. Fairly rich and appealing. On the palate, off dry, high acidity, with slight sparkle in the mouth, medium body and full concentration. This wine is long and has a sour tart finish which I like - brings crispness to the finish. Lip smacking. Very enjoyable for a Riesling lover. — 9 years ago

"Porphyr" Nahe Riesling 2017

Delectable Wine
9.0

Smoky struck flint wreaths, white peach, fig and lime on the nose. The palate impression is glossy and lusciously-fruited, with a bittersweet, crunchy hint of cassis berries adding to its appeal. The residual sugar is supportive, yet not perceived as outright sweetness. Hints of smoke persist intriguingly in a lingering finish. This lovely example of “hidden sweetness” in Riesling – coincidentally harboring the same 17 grams of residual sugar as its vintage 2016 predecessor – weighs in at slightly higher alcohol (exactly 12%) but preserves a nice sense of lift to accompany its animating juiciness. The source this year is half from Hexamer’s Schlossböckelheimer In den Felsen and half from a nearly adjacent portion of Schlossböckelheimer Mühlberg owned by a semi-retired grower whom Hexamer says farms conscientiously and is proud of the grapes he sells.
