Always a proprietary blend, in 2015 winemaker Mattias Pippig has composed the 'Misfit' using Syrah with Grenache, Cabernet Franc, Petite Syrah and Viognier. Inky and dense in the glass, the wine slowly yields intense aromas of mocha, Asian spice, crème de cassis and damp earth aromatics that all build in the glass. The palate shows sensational weight and texture, while the Viognier adds some floral tones on the mid-palate. Dense dark fruits connect with coffee grounds and creosote flavors as it displays a sensational combination of weight and poise. A delightful Campofiorin... Chocolate, black cherries and some coffee undertones. This is a Misfit of a wine, not because it wears and orange jump suit and does community service but because Masi are the only winery that don't call this Ripasso. Could probably benefit from a few more years in bottle but is very drinkable today. It's a winner... Like Charlie Sheen...

Über-bubble, if-just hazed, loose ocean foam, goes poof!, then just nebulae. Oily lacing of misfit moustaches. One swirl, though, and instant star nursery. Tangelo-lemon goodness blasts from the glass! Pure tropical mango from the tree. Grapefruit aspirations. Equally bright palate with the focus on a mineral-citrus that finds the perfect palatial trajectory, and sticks the landing on four hops. Namely, Mosaic for the baptismal tesserae, Citra for the gilded apse, Hallertau Blanc for the hallowed ground, and galaxy for the space between. Amen to the combo. Tartaric reverberations through a briny air, really quite evocative. This tastes the way Florida sometimes smells just after a rain. Tropical and saturated, but clean and spring-y. Jasmine, sweet grapefruit pith, lime and lemon. Really a great beer! .
