The 2021 Pinot Noir Sierra Mar Vineyard is a wild wine. Strong mineral and savory notes are front and center, while the fruit is more pushed into the background. The 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is slightly darker in color yet just as vibrant as the Annata sitting beside it. The Riserva blossoms with autumnal spices, tobacco and florals, giving way to a display of bright strawberry with flowery undergrowth. It’s enveloping and soft upon entry, with stimulating acids and tart red fruits that create a push-and-pull of sweet and sour, coming across as zesty and full of energy. Fresh cherry pits, licorice and inner rose linger over a nuanced layer of tannin. This gorgeous wine of tension is on the verge of peaking, with many, many years of pleasurable drinking in store for us. I can sit with this for hours. Sampled from the winery cellar.” — 3 years ago

Roses and violets, red and blue fruits, milling spices, slight Indian spice, medium acidity, nice mouth feel as well. I had never had this wine and after looking it up I realized this is a by product from Ed Selyams daughter Denise. — 4 years ago

Now, to top off the Rhone tasting for the weekend. I wanted to pull out some special juice from the cellar and this hit the spot. Sabon’s Secret de Sabon is an ethereal wine in any year- in my mind, it is the perfect, benchmark Chateauneuf. The ‘07, at 13 years old, is jaw dropping. Intense black fruit, kirsch, layered floral notes, mixed with incense and beef blood. Too concentrated to be believed but perfectly balanced. The tannins are like velvety silk gliding across the palate. The wine is almost all Grenache from 80 - 100 year old vines grown in sand and stone and aged in small barrels.
