Mills vineyard in the Mt. Harlan AVA in San Benito County. Transparent ruby turning orange at the rim. Unmistakeably Pinot Noir in the nose (the French would say "ça pinote") with morello cherries and a subtle earthy spiciness that I associate with a very good Nuits-Saint-Georges. Gains complexity in the glass, very nice smell. Medium-bodied, very balanced with fruit, spices, and present, but well-tamed tannin, fine acidity, perfectly integrated oak and a long spicy finish. Great value too. Josh Jensen never lets you down!

Appealingly sweet and focused on the palate, offering juicy dark berry, floral pastille and spicecake flavors that slowly deepen through the midpalate. Located in the limestone-rich Gavilan Mountains, east of Monterey. Josh Jensen planted Calera's first 23 acres of Pinot Noir in 1975. De Villiers, planted in 1997 on east-facing slopes high on Mt. Harlan. Third year of drought conditions lowered the yield in ‘14, aged for 20 months in new French oak (30% new). Intense aromas of dark berry fruits with rustic spice. Palate shows tart blackberry and dark cherry flavors with smoky tobacco, oak and subtle spice. Tight tannins, lingering complex ending, very nice. — 6 years ago

If aliens landed and asked "What does earth wine taste like?", I would hand them a bottle of this. 👽🍷 Not because I think it's the best earth has to offer but because I think it's a good representation of what fermented grapes taste like. Silky and sharply focused on the palate, showing juicy strawberry, orange zest and mineral qualities and a deeper suggestion of peach pit. Packs a lot of flavor but comes off lithe. Nicely concentrated red fruit and gravelly minerality are evident on the palate with firm acidity and moderate fine grained tannin evident on the finish. Josh Jensen made this from 100 % organically grown Pinot Noir sourced from vines planted in 1975, fermented with native yeasts, then aged 18 months in 30% new French oak.
