The 1980 vintage in Sauternes was challenging to say the least but Chateau D’Yquem has crafted one of the shining stars of the vintage. Aromatically quite expressive, the Sauternes takes the lead with candied ginger, lychee, apricot and shades of bananas foster that all sing in unison. The palate comes off with an unusual combination of sweet and sour tones, with a strong vein of salinity that races through the core of quince, sour apricot, vanilla creme brûlée and roasted pineapple flavors. Texturally elegant, this is far less on the unctuous side of D’Yquem, but has a beautiful feeling of refinement, freshness and elegance. Still humming at the forty year mark, the 1980 D’Yquem will provide drinking enjoyment for at least another five to ten years. Drink 2020-2027- 94 — 5 years ago

Bananas foster. Improved incredibly with food. — 9 years ago
Initially reticent and needing 30 minutes of air to fully express itself aromatically, the 2006 Chateau Rieussec opens with a lighter bouquet of butterscotch, buttered popcorn, mango and ginger undertones. The palate shows really good freshness and intensity with a good sense of minerality. Pineapple creme brulee, poached pear, bananas foster and nutmeg flavors complete this beautiful wine. The exceedingly long, finish lingers and rounds out this complete wine. What this doesn’t possess on the nose, exceeds expectations on the palate and finish, as this elegant wine is one of the great wines of this vintage. Enjoy this wonderful wine over the next two decades. Drink 2020-2035- 94 — 5 years ago
Tonight’s nightcap 🥃
Notes of honey, figs, and molasses on the nose; brings to mind a nice serving of bananas foster still aflame on the dinner table. On the palate smooth, balanced, and very expressive. This is a great Cognac without being a complete wallet buster. — 6 years ago
Sweet on the nose. Bananas foster, white pears. Smooth and light but with some oomph, still back hint of caramel but more melon and cantaloupe and some savory backbone I can’t identify. Good stuff. — 7 years ago

From the old vines-fresh fruit, bananas foster, apricot hint of peach melba. Rounded with length and boldness all wrapped in smooth oak. — 5 years ago
