Copain Estate Russian River Picpoul Blanc 2018

This stuff is brilliant. The 2019 is a bit more perfumed, a little more viscous. This 2018, though, is the big winner: light in color, grassy nose, and then lemon rind and brine. Maaaaybe a touch of green apple. This drinks like a Muscadet Sèvre et Maine, and that’s a wonderful thing. — 5 years ago

Have very little experience with Copain, but I’ve got a couple of their Syrahs...remember them being very unique. Floral. Your notes above seem to align with that. Won’t let mine sit too long!

"Les Voisins" Yorkville Highlands Syrah 2015

Virtuoso Syrah. Love the bright red berry fruits on the front end and the balance throughout. Nice silky tannins and a modest finish. A 30 minute decant made a world of difference. — 5 years ago

Eaglepoint Ranch Mendocino County Syrah 2001

Dense and aromatic, with ripe blackberry and cassis but no sweetness or syrup. Loads upon a loads of white pepper. Fine tannins. This has aged remarkably well. I have this sense, perhaps mistaken, that Wells basically did a stylistic about face between 2006 and 2007 but perhaps that overstated the case. — 8 years ago

Kiser "En Bas" Anderson Valley Pinot Noir 2014

Tasting at Copain. Beautiful winery with some sweeping views of Sonoma. Again no bottles so just the menu. The Laurel grades was an amazing wine, parcel of land by the ocean. It had that salt/mineral undertone and was crisp. Tidal wave was also very good and similar to a savignon blanc. The high rock Syrah was very good they let’s us try an 09 to give an idea of how it evolves. Solid wine. The 2014 was too tannic to get a good feel for the wine. — 8 years ago

Quick highlight of the Copain Wines tasting at the storage facility recently. 6 wines were poured, 2 of them single vineyard. Since those two stuck out the most, I’ll just post those.

I’ve heard rave reviews of Copain’s Pinots. The goal here is more of an old world style...low ABV, express the terroir, don’t let the fruit overpower, etc. This checks off all 3. Very nice acidity here and nothing brash at all. Lots of red fruit with additional layers of licorice and hay. Earthy finish. A nice change up from the big, extracted Bevan like Pinots (though I personally love that type).
