Château Le Pin

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 2011

Ethereal, silky and marvelously poised, the 2011 Le Pin (WWB, 97) is sourced from an extremely small estate is located in the commune of Pomerol. It is amongst the world's most expensive red wines, as this was very graciously shared by my colleague Dr. Hong. I was most impressed by the opulent, pillowy texture of the wine, which is still quite primary now at the eight year mark. Elegant tannins line the massive core of dark fruits, all leading the breathtaking, near minute-long finish. This true heavyhitter really needs another ten years of bottle age to hit its stride and will provide drinking enjoyment past my lifetime. Drink 2025-2055- 97 — 5 years ago

Château du Cros

Loupiac Blanc Sémillon 2014

This sweet Bordeaux pushes all the right buttons for a wine style that wants to be known as “more than dessert.” The rich golden hue beckons, while the nose of candied fruit is draped in a cloak of minerality. The palate certainly wants to be more than an after-dinner afterthought. The viscous mouthfeel, bracing acidity and mineral-driven flavor profile form a trio unlikely to be caught traveling together in most sweet wines. These have been doing it for centuries. — 6 years ago

Oakville Cabernet Franc 2009

I loved this bottle, decant for hour, dark rich, almost ink grade. Beautiful nose, of cocoa, and Caramel, some spice, earthy, minerals, it hit all the right buttons for me, silky smooth, with a long oak finish, fabulous! — 7 years ago

Kapitel I Red Blend 2014

9.1

I've been on the hunt for this for a while now, and I'm happy to finally get some in my glass. The juicy cab franc with its spicy and peppery undertones does take in a Loire direction, but then the zweigelt adds a different sort of funk that pushes it into new territory. A lot going on here for such a quaffable wine, and it comes across as dynamic, alive and idiosyncratic. It also pushes all my happy buttons. Yum. Holla @Phil Ashton! — 7 years ago

Maybe it was the 12 hours of work prior . Maybe it's the drop in temperature these last couple of days . This wine straight from opening hit all the happy buttons. Drink it on its own on with some rustic bread , olive oil and a selection of non supermarket , unpasteurised rind washed cheeses . — 9 years ago

Maison B. Perraud

Fleurie Gamay 2013

Perhaps my favorite Perraud yet. Hits all the right “thinking wine” buttons – no mucking around in the winery, minimal sulfur addion, great care taken in the vineyards, blah blah blah. And quite delicious. Best with a slight chill and can go for days without losing its tastiness. Dark berry fruits, mulberry skins, underlying minerality and texture that manages to be a touch silky and crunchy all at once. (‘Crunchy??’ Yes, crunchy. Think of that snap of freshness when you bite into an apple. That’s crunchy.) — 9 years ago

Fratelli Revello

Langhe Nebbiolo 2015

Run by brothers Carlo and Lorenzo, located in Frazione Annunziata in commune of La Morra, hand harvested. Medium Garnet with intense aromas of red fruits, oak and earthy notes. On the developing palate flavors of sour cherry, currants, toasty smoky oak and earthy herbs. Generous acidity, full body with big fine tannins on long finish ending with earthy character. Very good now but will get better in the cellar. Tasting Sample. — 5 years ago

I like a shit-ton of acid in my Chenin, and this manages to provide that along side the rich orchard fruit and fresh honeycomb typical of Anjou. Throw in a heaping helping of minerality wrapped in wisps of smoke and you've got something that pushes all my buttons. Damn this is good, and so, so young. — 7 years ago

Château Haut-Beauséjour

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2011

St. Estèphe, literally a stone's throw from the more prestigious Paulliac region, while not topping its sister commune by any means certainly holds its own. Huge initial notes include cassis, black currant, and anise followed by some of the largest tannins I've tasted in a wine this young. Great wine from a lesser well-known commune. 💥 for 💵 — 7 years ago

Château Margaux

Premier Grand Cru Classé Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

Giving absolute credence to the reputation that the wines from the Margaux commune show, both displayed an elegance allied with a subtle power and perfect balance, especially 2005.

2000 had a trace pyrazine note that I found unexpected, and quite frankly not that enjoyable. Outside of that the wine was perfect. The second bottle did not throw it as strong, so not exactly in the clear on this night.

The 2005 was in perfect shape, drink now or age it another 20 years easy, this was so enjoyable and balanced with perfect tannin integration and a seamless, dense and pure finish that sailed on forever.

Morellino di Scansano Sangiovese Blend 2016

€16 on the restaurant wine list for a Sangiovese, Merlot and Syrah blend. At one of the nicest restaurant in San Quirico D’Orcia, a small commune in the Tuscan hills, but weren’t impressed with our food selections. Wine was pleasant but not a lot of depth. Served from their cabinet above the refrigerators, so we needed to cool it off a few degrees in an ice bucket. — 5 years ago

Marsannay Pinot Noir Rosé 2016

9.1

On the nose, perfumed, candied fruits of strawberries, watermelon, cherries & Rainer cherries. Ballpark chewing gum, soft, powdery chalkiness and pink rose petals. The mouthfeel is round, ripe and fresh. Fruits are; ripe strawberries, watermelon, cherries & Rainer cherries. Ballpark chewing gum, roses petals and really like the soft, delicate, powdery chalkiness and minerality. Acidity is round, soft and mouthwatering. The long finish is round, fresh and delicious. The 2016 yield was about 1/2 of normal. Photos of; the Marasanny vineyard being harvested, outside shot of the Domaine & their stainless tanks in the the cellar as well as Cyril. Producer history and notes...Domaine Charles Audoin lies in the village of Marsannay-la-Côte. Descended from a long line of wine growers passing down from father to son, Charles Audoin took over the family property in 1972 with his wife Marie-Françoise, an oenologist by training. Located within the commune of Marsannay-la-Côte. Domaine Charles Audoin began with only three hectares but the estate has grown to nearly 35 acres with a diversity of soils. After taking over his father’s five acres of vineyards, Charles Audoin and wife Marie-Françoise developed the estate through the restoration and the purchase of new lots. Their vines are over 45 years of age on average and have a south-eastern orientation. Cyril prefers lower yields and has less intensive extraction for softer and more elegant wines. Happy Bastille everyone!

René Bouvier

La Justice Gevrey-Chambertin Pinot Noir 2012

Said my 14-year-son as I decanted this wine and let him take a sniff: "It smells more than any other wine I ever smelled before!" The notes of red PN-typical fruits are really intense and interesting, and, on the one hand, the wine delivers hints of horse-stable and earth, and on the other hand, has a lovely sensual perfume; the mid-palate-dominated wine has soft tannins, a northern-Rhône-like "meat-savouriness", and a rather short finish that nevertheless reveals potential for developmemt. Some new oak is evident on the palate and alcohol seems higher than the restrained 13% indicated. The La Justice commune-appelation plots are located northeast of the Gevrey-Ch. village. Will try again in 2018 (and then I will remember to play the same recording of The New World Symphony as today; music & wine is as important as wine & food to me). Had with gruyere and spanish ham cut from the hiney of a pata negra acorn-fed pig. — 8 years ago

Three Whites Adelaide Hills White Blend 2015

Absolutely divine little blend of Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris sourced from the ever so promising Basket Range. One of the more smashable drops you will have for the year. Cloudy and Juicy in appearance. Prominent Gewurz making itself apparent early with a touch of the sweetest of spices and a big hit of Rosewater and juicy plum flesh. Crisp acidity and a slightly zippy mouth feel. The palate delivers with delicate violets, rosewater, white plums and pink lemonade, never would've picked any Gris until a tiny finish of pear. Can not go wrong in the slightest for the price if you’re lucky enough to get your hands on one. Enjoyed with some spinach gnocci — 9 years ago
