Tasting wine is a whole lot like a blind person feeling your face for far too long to "see" what you look like. Feeling this wine with my tongue and cheeks, I at first perceived a gestalt of dried sage, shy green olives, withered twig, a satchel of dehydrated and tart, unripe cherries, moon-harvested autumn cranberry, expired Craisins and straw.
Then, as I bore past the nose circa 45 minutes later, I felt up a minerality of sun-baked slate and parched potting soil (not wet potting soil)
And... just before the cops arrived, I copped another feel about 2 hours later and I beheld more of a wizened menthol and eucalyptus on this, the 2001 clos du val.
The cork broke several times before the very bottom of it ahso very gently came out intact. Phew! — 8 years ago

Tonight's bottle hails from Riverbench winery. This one's a Pinot Noir, a Pommard Clone Pinot Noir to be exact. The Pinot Noir grape hails from the great family of Pinot varietals, aka the Gris, the Blanc, the Noir, etc, The Pommard clone has found its way into California vineyards via cuttings from Pinot Noir from the Château de Pommard in France circa the 1940s. The original being the "Clone 4", and then giving birth to a daughter, the "Clone 5". The Pommard Clone 5 has slowly been making a name for itself all along the west coast, from Oregon to Southern California. It tends to deliver a meaty/gamey flavor with pure dark fruit flavors. This vintage shows a wonderful restraint and great balanced structure to deliver a wonderfully light red wine, perfect for any occasion. ~$46 | #riverbench #pinotnoir #pommard
On the eyes: Bright, clear cranberry red, med- stain, med tears, no gas/floc.
On the nose: Earthy, herbaceous, blood orange, and bruléed strawberry. Med alcohol.
On the tongue: Med acid, med tannin, med alcohol, med round body with great balance. Pleasantly tart, slightly floral with bright cranberry and blueberry, and dusty old road that yields to a memory of smoky oak. This one is drinking young and could probably do with another few years in the bottle, but I just couldn't resist a Riverbench Pinot. — 10 years ago
@Stagsleap #wine #PetiteSirah was label I bought with my first paycheck in the industry (1997 vint) circa 2001. The vintage has changed, but is still a staple just the same.
Opaque in the glass. Minute ruby color at rims edge. Oily sheen.
Some herbs on the nose. Dull mint and oregano. Robust and dense.
The palate is sleek with tannins landing mid palate to finish. Nicely incorporated. Boysenberry with damp earth. Inky and stinky, it shows some potpourri (olfactory), and subtle bitterness residual. Balanced and great lingering flavor. Opened 12/10/15 — 10 years ago

I have a history with this wine as it was an early love for me circa 1999 off a wine list at Aureole (the original Aureole). In haven’t had it in almost as many years and so a I grabbed a few bottles of 09. I don’t drink a lot of Bordeaux anymore but this seems to display more earth and less fruity to me than I expected. Bold alcohol content. Still showing some sharp edges. I like this wine but my 25 year old self had a very different palate. — 7 years ago

We are drinking a circa 1982. 35 years old! After decanting and letting breath half an hour we stepped into the world of this Bordeaux. The bottle wasn't full. The cork was extremely rotted. First impression, incredibly creamy, jammy and multiple generation of tastes. Soft tannins and long lasting. Earthy and woody. Absolutely shocking how complex this is. It's what makes you fall in love with wine. What's makes you comprehend the life of a wine. We also identified a pine resin and wood notes texture while others found it smoky and raisin-flavoured. One of the best wines we've tried. Revisited after an hour. Noticed it became smokier, earthier and leathery. Cloudiness and rusty colour remains. Wow. Wow. — 9 years ago

A Syrah-like Mondeuse. Aromatic, purplely (yes, purplely) with ripe fruit, though it’s the texture that’s earning it high marks. Someone on an earlier thread described it as “velour” (not in the matching-juicy-sweatsuit-circa-2004-tacky way, but in a blanket you want to wrap yourself in at the end of a satisfying day sort of way). A solid wine with which to toast to the happy occasion of having an old New York friend in town. Can’t remember the vintage. Matt? — 7 years ago
Smoother, a bit sweeter, fruity notes, and tasty! — 8 years ago
Pour a berry compote into a freshly opened can of tennis balls. That's this wine. @Gary Vaynerchuk that's a tasting note a la vayner show wltv circa 2008. — 9 years ago
Dark fruits and good structure. Grainy tannins. Good value at circa £15. — 9 years ago

Sipping Fine Wine
Had this about a year ago. The Clos Pegase label features Pegasus, painted circa 1890 by the French artist Redon. Pale lemon with aromas of fresh fruit and floral scents. On the palate apple and melon flavors, creamy with pronounced oak and citrus notes. Medium finish, good balance ending with fruit and oak character. Aged well from a year ago. Good value! — 6 years ago
