Surprise of the day. Never had a wine from Rhys but this wine alone made me sign up on the list. Best way to describe this is as a happy marriage between Ceritas chards (steely, lean) and Aubert (powerful, full). The acidity here was a refreshing break from the big, oaked Cali chards but it still retained flavor that balanced tropical note with the oak in check. Supremely balanced. — 6 years ago

Wait list is currently 3-4 yrs. Happy to share any chards, pinot, or syrah (arguably the best thing they make) anytime you would like.

@Patrick Derdeyn : I want to say “wow” at that wait list time, but after trying this, can’t say I’m too surprised. Would love to try more of their stuff, especially Syrah. We are long overdue and meeting and sharing wine so we need to do so soon.

Silver Eagle Vineyard Chardonnay 2013

Seaweed, sesame, wet stone, with a pleasant reductive edge. Deft use of oak. Besides Ceritas, this is the best domestic Chardonnay I have tasted this year. — 9 years ago

Liquid Farm

Golden Slope Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay 2015

A favorite bottle to commemorate some new ink. Always love LF, as this is a chard that definitely grows and progresses as it opens up and warms up in the glass. Beautiful notes of iris, candied pineapple, melon, toasted walnuts, and saline minerality on the nose. Gorgeous texture and purity of fruit.. bruised apple, Meyer lemon, papaya, and chalky minerals. Bright zingy acidity on the backend, but not as lean as something like Ceritas or Failla - a bit more baby fat and textural complexity on this bottle that keeps you coming back for more. A perfect hybrid of styles by Jeff Nelson and co. Paired with a creamy bow tie pasta with dried tomatoes and a spring salad. — 6 years ago

I’ve only had their entry level chard, this sounds nice. Think you told me about it when we were discussing Ceritas. Impressive ink!

Migration (Duckhorn Vineyards)

Charles Heintz Vineyard Chardonnay 2012

The Migration label first appeared in 2001 as the second label of Goldeneye, both under the Duckhorn masthead, first focusing on Pinot Noir and later adding Chardonnay. Like Paraduxx to Duckhorn, it is no longer a second label, but a winery unto itself. In 2008 Migration, and by extension, Duckhorn, produced its first Chardonnay. In 2009 they produced their first Chardonnay from the legendary Charles Heintz Vineyard. The Charles Heintz Vineyard is located just outside of the town of Occidental where Charlie’s family has farmed the land for over 100 years. Two ridges in, and only about 8 miles from the Pacific Ocean, the vineyard is situated in the Green Valley of Russian River Valley AVA. Heintz has become one of the most famous Chardonnay sites in California, with notable producers including Ceritas, DuMol, Freeman, Flowers, L'Angevin, Kosta Browne, Littorai, Migration/Duckhorn, Moone-Tsai, Pierson Meyer, and Williams Selyem. With its classic Goldridge sandy loam soils, and located just above the fog line, the vineyard receives abundant sunshine and cool ocean breezes. Super mellow Chardonnay, with candied orchard fruit, honeysuckle, wet stone, and some secondary hazelnut, with just a flutter of mushroom in the background. — 7 years ago

Wow. Didn't know they worked with Heintz. One of my favorite small producers, Montagu Wines, has a Heintz chard coming out in a year or two. Their Durell vineyard and Ritchie vineyard (with the help of Russell Bevan on the Richie one) have been outstanding. Looking forward to trying Heintz.
